Spring “Romance”
Blooming at Wildlife
Division’s Game Farm
Spring “romance” is blooming in
a big way at the Wildlife Division’s
game farm near Atlanta where 1,500
pairs of Bobwhite quail are mating.
Because of the large number of
birds. Superintendent Ralph Buice
is pairing them off, rather than let
ting them select their own mates as
they do in the wild, Director Zack
D. Cravey said.
In most instances, “happy match
es” are the result of Superintendent
Buice’s cupid activities, although a
fussy female now and then will re
ject her mate. She shows her antag
onism by pecking the unlucky
groom’s head or feet until Mr. Buice
removes him. He gives her a second
mate in such event, and, if neces
sary, a third.
Once last spring the Superintend
ent had such trouble with a choosy
quail, he named her Miss Scarlett
O’Hara and turned her loose in the
wild to find a. husband of her own
selection —that was after she had
pecked and quarreled with the fifth
one given her.
Last summer 40,000 eggs and
10,000 day-old quail were furnished
4-H and FFA club members, farm
ers and sportsmen who had suitable
land on which the bird could be re
leased. This season, according to
Mr. Cravey, all eggs will be hatched
at the farm, in the most modem of
incubators, and only day-old birds
will be distributed. He estimated
that about 70,000 will be available
between the last of June and Sep
tember.
The new plan, he predicted, will
result in a far higher percentage of
hatch and the young birds, more
over, will be stronger and more
likely to survive. Many new laying
pens have just been completed at
the game farm.
The Director urged landowners to
plant ceresia lespedeza, benne, part
ridge peas, or other plants for game
birds on their places. He said fires
must be kept out of the woods, oth
erwise the wildlife will be killed
or will flee from the area.
Rangers report that a good crop
of brood stock has been left by
hunters in the field and this, plus
restocking carried on by the game
farm, should supply plenty of birds
for next hunting season.
Blakely F. F. A. News
At the last Blakely F. F. A. Chap
ter meeting, the following members
won the right of speaking in the
finals of the chapter public speaking
contest: Andy Lanier, James White,
and Leonard George. The winner
will represent the chapter at the
contest in Bluffton April 13.
Members of the quartet have also
been chosen. These are Andy La
nier, Wilson Fryer, Fred Presley,
Mack Balkeom, with James White,
pianist. The quartet will also par
ticipate in a quartet contest at
Bluffton.
At the annual Cattle Show last
week, members of the chapter did
exceptionally well with their calves,
Billy Peters winning Grand Cham
pion and Bobby Fleming Reserve
Champion. In the Judging Contest,
James White and Charles Shierling
tied for first. Wilson Fryer, Leon
ard White and Max Holman tied for
third with two Hilton F. F. A. mem
bers. Other winners were announced
in last week’s paper.
Last Friday, the first hatch of
baby chicks came off from the chap
ter incubator. Another hatching will
be set Friday. By owning and op
erating an incubator, members of
the chapter are able to get their
chicks at a much smaller cost.

CLEANING EGGS
Eggs to be sold should be cleaned
off even if only slightly soiled, says
E. J. Richardson, Extension poultry
marketing economist. “A clean cloth
moistened w’ith vinegar in one cor
ner will remove small dirty spots.
Very dirty eggs should be used at
home.”
