Driver’s License
Must Be Renewed
By Midnight June 30
Have you renewed your driver’s
license? Only twelve more days to
renew before June 30th. Major
Jphn E. Goodwin, Commissioner of
the Department of Public Safety, ad
vises that Georgia car owners and
drivers may still be able to get some
gasoline and their tires will last for
some time with careful driving, and
to do any driving at all, they must
have a driver’s license. Even if the
car has been placed in the garage
for the duration, there will come a
time when it will be absolutely nec
essary to use the car, so the owner
should renew his license and avoid
the embarrassment of being stopped
and not be able to present to the
officer his driving license.
Major Goodwin points out that
there are some people who still be
lieve that all members of a family
can be licensed in one driver’s li
cense. *This is erroneous, for each
driver must make separate applica
tion for a driver’s license.
To renew a license the applicant
must fill out completely the neces
sary application for license, attach
renewal stub from his old license,
and a postoffice or express money
order or cashier’s or certified check,
and mail to Driver’s License Divis
ion, Department of Public Safety,
Atlanta, Ga., before midnight of
June 30, 1942.

ROTARIANS HEAR TALK
ON NEW CO-OPERATIVE
CANNING PLANT HERE
E. H. Cheek, Vocational Agricul
ture teacher in the Blakely-Union
school, was the guest speaker at
last week’s meeting of the Blakely
Rotary Club. Introduced by Rota
rian J. B. Jones, program chairman
for the day, Mr. Cheek discussed the
new canning plant just completed on
the campus of the school. It is a
non-profit project, the only charge
to the public being for the cans,
such charge also including a minimum
amount for the fuel necessary in
canning operations. Mr. Cheek said
the erection of the platn was made
possible through the assistance of
the Board of County Commissioners,
the County Board of Education, the
Board of Trustees of the Blakely-
Union district, and the City Council
of Blakely. He urged the public to
use the plant and promises strict
supervision over the plant’s opera
tion.
Another visitor at Friday’s meet
ing was Mr. Ruben Perlman, of New
ark, N. J., who was a guest of Ro
tarian Barney Wynne.
President Henry Wall presided ov
er the meeting, with Mrs. Ben Hais
ten rendering a program of music.

Rationing Regulation
For Sugar Allowance
For Home Canning
The Office of Price Administration
today took steps to conserve the na
tion’s fruit crop through the is
suance of a new sugar rationing
regulation which will permit persons
who do home canning to obtain su
gar in proportion to the amount of
fruit canned.
Under the new regulation, home
canners may obtain one pound of su
gar for every four quarts of finished
canned fruit, and an additional
pound of sugar for each member of
the family unit for the packing of
preserves, jams, jellies and fruit
butters.
The previous regulation permitted
each person to obtain a total of five
pounds for home canning. If this
amount has already been used, it
must be computed in any new
home canning sugar allotment.
Price Administrator Leon Hender
son said the new regulation does
not mean that unlimited supplies of
sugar are now available for home
canning.
Consumers wanting to take ad
vantage of this new regulation may
make application to their respective
local rationing boards, using OPA
Form R-315, which is the Special
Purpose Application for a Sugar
Purchase Certificate. One adult mem
ber of family unit may apply for
the entire family.
In making applications, consumers
must furnish information which will
enable the local boards to determine
the quantity of sugar which the
family unit needs.
An applicant must give the names
of all consumers on whose behalf an
application is filed, the serial num
bers of their War Ration Books, the
number of quarts of fruit packed
last year, the number of quarts of
fruit now in their possession and
the number of quarts they intend to
can during the period for which the
application is made.
The OPA warned that on any sub
sequent application for sugar for
purposes of home canning, the ap
plicant will be required to report the
number of quarts of fruit actually
canned with the sugar previously
obtained, and the quantity of sugar
and canned goods remaining on hand.
A person making a false report will
be subject to the penalties pre
scribed for violation of the rationing
regulations.
If any of the sugar allotted for
home canning was not used in ac
cordance with regulations, stamps
will be removed from War Ration
Books equivalent in weight value to

NATION-WIDE DRIVE
NOW ON TO GATHER
SCRAP RUBBER
A nation-wide campaign, begin
ning Monday, June 15, and contin
uing for two weeks, is under way
to gather scrap rubber for the na
tion’s war effort.
The several thousand filling sta
tions throughout the country are to
serve as receiving stations and are
authorized by the government to pay
a cent a pound for all scrap rubber
left at the stations. The government
will reimburse the stations for the
amount they expend for this pur
pose.
Every American is urged to thor
oughly search the homes, yards,
places of business and premises and
to gather any discarded tire or other
article made of rubber which is of
no use or value and carry it to the
nearest service station.
The amount of rubber gathered
during these two weeks may deter
mine whether gasoline rationing is
to be nation-wide and also whether
there may be some rubber allotted
for retreading and recapping pur
poses.
FISHING LICENSES
ARE NOW ON SALE
AT SHERIFF’S OFFICE
Fishing licenses for the 1942-’43
season are on sale in this county at
the office of Clarence E. Martin,
sheriff, in Blakely, State Wildlife
Director Zack D. Cravey announced
today.
He said they cost $1.25 for resi
dents, including all service men from
any state who are stationed in Geor
gia, and are sold in each county
seat. Out-of-town residents pay
$5.25 for a season license; $2.50
for a 30-day license, and $1.50 for
one which is good for 10 dass.
The only fishermen who do not
need a license are (1) those under
16 years of age and (2) those who
fish just in the county of their legal
residence and only use worms for
bait.
Director Cravey expressed appre
ciation for the cooperation given con
servation by fishermen during the
past season and said he is appealing
for such support again.
He also said that reports from
throughout the state indicate fishing
conditions are good this season.
The only legal way to catch fish
in Georgia, Mr. Cravey reminded, is
with hook and line. He urged that
anyone seen using nets, traps, seines,
baskets, guns or dynamite to get fish
be reported to the Wildlife Division
or a Wildlife Ranger.

the amount of sugar improperly
used.
The success of the program de
pends upon the consumers and the
local boards, the OPA said, urging
that those who apply for sugar ask
for only the amount that is actually
needed for canning during the period
announced by the board, with the
understanding that the sugar will
be used in strict accordance with the
objectives of the program.
