|2 Reasons Why Eugene Talmadge Is Serving I
His Last Term as Governor of Georgia
:
♦
1. Because he is against Education. He
vetoed the free school book law. He
vetoed the seven months common
school law. He boasts of having a
$10,000,000 surplus in the state treas
ury, but yet he persistently refuses to
increase our teacher’ pay, while Negro
porters and janitors draw more money
than do our school teachers.
2. He has discredited our State Universi
ty School system. By injecting his
ruthless politics into the very Univers
ity itself he has caused our Georgia col
leges to be dropped from the accredit
ed list of the Association of Southern
• Colleges, bringing shame and disgrace
upon every freedom-loving Georgian.
3. Because he has falsely cried “Nigger,
Nigger.” In his effort to keep his po
litical ship from sinking, he has even
attempted to stir up race trouble. He
stoops to any means to get votes. No
clear-thinking Georgian believes there
j has been, or ever will be, any attempt
to permit Negroes to attend our time
honored University. If there had been
any attempt to enroll Negroes in the
white schools of this state, Georgia
boys and girls would have dealt with
the situation in no uncertain manner,
and that without the services of a red
gallused dictator.
4. Because he is against Old Age Pen
sions. In 1935 he vetoed the Old Age
Pension Bill and said that old people
would have to go to work or their chil
dren would have to support them. This
bill was passed by the Legislature in
spite of Talmadge and not because of
him.
5. Because he falsely pretends to be a
friend of the poor man. He publicly
Talmadge is a beat man. No one knows this better than Ole Red Galluses. Thousands of his oldest and staunchest supporters
have fallen away from him. Small crowds and a marked lack of enthusiasm point to certain defeat.
On the other hand, the voters of this county not only have some one to vote against, but a fine man to vote for. Ellis Arnall is one
of the cleanest men in Georgia politics today. In all of his rantings up and down the state our pee-wee dictator has uttered not one word
against our next governor. His record is spotless. True, Talmadge has shadow-boxed with certain newspapermen and has attacked
former administrations, but his failure to connect Ellis Arnall with any of these has been outstanding. t

(This advertisement paid for by friends of Ellis Arnall in Early County.)
EARLY COUNTY NEWS, BLAKELY, GEORGIA
stated that the man in overalls is worth
only a dollar a day, but yet the Man
from Sugar Creek, Eugene Talmadge
himself, is today one of the largest
landowners in Georgia, only recently
having bought a farm for the munifi
cent sum of $25,000, all in new one
thousand dollar bills. Where did the
Governor get this $25,000? (Wonder
how many Early countians have ever
seen a one-thousand-dollar bill, much
less own one.)
6. Because he has the worst pardon rack
et of any Governor in the State’s long
history. The records show that he has
turned loose 4,500 convicted criminals.
Some of them have been given state
jobs of trust to be paid by the tax-pay
ing citizens of this state.
7. Because he consorts with criminals
and racketeers. His bosom friend and
companion is Mercer Harbin, Atlan
ta’s famous “bug racket man,” who
has had his liquor license revoked by
the City of Atlanta for boot-legging
liquor to dry counties. Mercer Harbin
accompanied Ole Gene to the Ken
tucky Derby and sat in the Governor’s
box with him. Mercer is also a Lieu
tenant Colonel on the Governor’s staff.
Mercer Harbin boasts that he can get
anything in Georgia he wants by sim
ply speaking to the Governor. He even
rates higher than our Board of County
Commissioners.
8. Because he falsely claims to have paid
off a twenty-nine million dollar state
debt. Talmadge knows, and the state
auditor’s report shows that he hasn’t
done any such thing. His claim is an
insult to the intelligence of all of us
and is as ridiculous as his race issue.
1
9. Because he brags and prates about re
ducing taxes, when as a matter of fact
he has collected more from the people
of Georgia than any other Governor
ever has. The past auditor’s report
shows that he collected fifty-nine _ mil
lion dollars from the state tax payers
in 1941, nearly 17 million more than
any previous administration. !
10. Because he is the most extravagant
governor Georgia ever had. He has
squandered nearly one hundred mil
lion dollars of state and federal funds
in the past year and a half. He boast- i
ed that he was going to reduce the ♦
number of state employees, but did he i
do it? No! Instead of reducing them ♦ I
he has added 720 to the pay roll as of ♦
June 1st, and since that date he has
hired almost 500 more in an effort to
get votes.
11. Because has never given Early county
its equal share of paved roads and oth- l
er benefits to which our county is just- ♦
ly entitled. He let our CCC camp be «• i
moved to Mississippi, thus killing all
hope of Early county ever having this
beautiful park. He has had six years
to pave the Columbia road, but has
done nothing about it until the past
few weeks, when he rushed a bunch of
machinery out on this project in an at
tempt to fool the voters of Early coun
ty. Our Board of County Commission
ers claim that Talmadge is paving this
road. There isn’t any paving yet and !
nobody knows it any better than our ♦
Commissioners. i
12. Because he called the CCC boys a i
bunch of “loafers and bums.” This is i
boys, an insult because to the some parents of our of these better fine citi- l
zens in Early county today are former
members of the CCC.
