D. L. MAXWELL, County Agent
No one will want to miss J. W.
Panning’s talk Friday night (the
33th) at 8 o’clock in the courthouse.
Mr. Fanning is an economist with
the Georgia Agricultural Extension
Service. His talk will center around
the farmers’ outlook for 1953 and
the years immediatey ahead of us.
Recognized as one of the most en
tertaining and best informed speak
ers in the state, Mr. Fanning is con
stantly being called- upon to speak at
civic clubs, bankers’ meetings, finance
short courses, and similar meetings
where interest is centered around a
profitable, well balanced agriculture.
The meeting Friday night is a
Farm Bureau pieetng, but I am sure
the Farm Bureau officials would wel
come anyone who copies to this
meeting. Mr. Fanning’s talk should
interest farmers, merchants, bank
ers, implement dealers, warehouse
men—anyone connected in any way
with agriculture.
Farm Bureau leaders have taken a
big step forward in sponsoring a ru
ral telephone program for Early
County. The Telephone Committee,
recently appointed by the F. B. pres
ident, has a big job to do, and we
should all do our part in helping
them do a good job would
Telephones in Early county
be a tremendous help, not only to
the fanners, but to the merchants,
also; the fertilizer dealer, the hard
ware dealer, the gasoline dealer, the
tractor dealer. Everyone would ben
efit from the rural telephone.
If there is anything that you can
do in helping to get telephones in
Early County, I am sure the Tele
phone Committee would appreciate
it.

We have all been camellia-con
scious recently——the onlooker as
well as the camellia grower. To the
grower the problems concerning the
health of the camellias are very im
portant. insects attacking
There are a few
the camellia. The most common in
sects which attack camellias are (1)
the tea scale, which secretes a white,
cottony fuzz that will soon cover the
under side of leaves if not checked
promptly, and (2) the camellia scale,
which appears as a reddish-yellow
elongated oystershell and which is
usually detected by a light spot on
the supper side of the leaf over its
position on the under surface. Both
of these are very small sucking in
sects which multiply rapidly. They
may be controlled by spraying an
oil emulsion of volck, using a 1 to
2 per cent solution. Make the first
application as soon as danger of
frost is over; if necessary, repeat
in about two weeks. If scale per
sists, spray again in September and
October. Do not apply spray in hot
weather as it will result in burning
and loss of flower buds, neither
should they be applied when there
is danger of frost. If you have only
a few small plants and are not pre
pared to spray, there is no better
method of controlling scale than a
brisk washing or brushing of the
under side of the leaves with
strong soapy solution of water. If
scale is present on the top side of
the leaves, this area of the leaves
should be given the same treatment.
An oil emulsion and Black Leaf 40
used according to directions on the
package will also rid the plant of
these insects.
There are few diseases that attack
the camellia. Formopsis or “dieback”
is the most common disease. This
is a sudden dying of twigs should and be
limbs. The dead material
cut back to five wood and burned.
The plant should be sprayed with
medium strength toordeaux mixture
just before the leaf buds burst in
the spring. Repeat in 4 to 6 weeks.
This should not be done during hot
weather or periods of low tempera
tures. It is a good idea to mix the
oil emulsion and bordeaux and apply
both at the same time.
Often a leaf will show dead spots
and occasionally a large portion of
the leaf will die. This is usually the
of sun scald, Semi-shading
of plants and liberal watering lessen
the danger of sun scald.
Honey bees are beneficial to most
agricultural crops, fruit and berry
orchards, according to entomologists
for the Agricultural Extension Serv
ice of the University of Georgia.
