PICKLE I
By EARL “TIGE” I
j !
Old-timers like to brag about walk
school frozen ;
ing two .miles to on
ground. The next generation ■will
probably boast of having ridden to
school on a bus that wasn’t heated
and air-conditioned.
Critics have ben defined as people
hiss and tell.
Maybe the world is going to
itself out after all. There
is talk of peace in Korea, and the
ladies’ Easter hats this year actually
looked like hats, At least some of
them did.
definition . . ... .
They say that the , oi
news is not when a dog bites a man
when a man bites a dog. By
these standards, Joe Nunnery, one
time down at Jakin could have made
the headlines, if there had been a
reporter around. If you know Joe,
then you know what a
ing fellow he is, and this incident
happened in the days when he was
even more of a man than now. One
time Joe was looking at a bunch ot
mules in a pen, and as he passed one
little old mule, he slapped the ™ule
on the back and ; V

got up and without g g ,
any warning, either, kicked the mule
down.
Times 6 have changed and the world
moves 0 n. Folks used to meet the
train and see who got on and who
got off. Notice in the papers where
President Eisenhower expresses a
yearning for these old days, and men
tioned especially the old country
store where folks gathered for busi
ness as well as social reasons. Ihe
old country store has about become
extinct, and with its passing has
g*o ne an era that was good and fine.

I suppose John Hall has got about
the nearest thins out at Colomokee
to one of the stores, for which the
President expressed a longing, as
you will find anywhere. Hut in one
respect John has gone as modern as
one can go. John daily gets papers
delivered right in his front yard
each afternoon by airplane. The
plane comes in for some low flying,
a wing and the pilot throws
the papers out. This is a signal,
according to “Fess’ ’Williams, for all
the folks to come on to the store and
get the news. “Fess” says one fel
low almost lost a crop last year
by standing in the field watching for
the paper plane. The only trouble
about returning to the old days, one
must take the unpleasant things
along with the pleasant. It would be
all right to go back to he times
when folks had moments for visit
ing, gossiping and being neighborly,
going on picncs, swapping work, pay
ing 50 cents for flour and ten cents
for meat, but along with it one must
go back to cuttin’ stove wood, draw
ing water, feeding mules and hogs,
and working for $1.50 per day. This
was what went on when one speaks
of the good old days. Well, the good
old days are gon forever—I hope.
From the Lion Monthly Newslet
ter comes this poem taken from the
Pike County, Ga., Bulletin:
I vowed I’d skim the morning light
To make you a golden crown;
I’d reap the beams when the moon is
bright
And weave you a gossamer gown;
I’d pluck some stars, scoop up t he
dew,
For jewels for your hair;
bring a million larks to you
j 0 g ; n g. away y, 0 ur care;
p ( j spread the night’s deep velvet
robe
_\nd cover over your bed;
j.j bring you the treasures of the
globe,
when pj you and I were wed.
j gajj dedicate each day
To granting all your wishes—
But never, never, did I say
I’d wash these gosh-darned dishes!
Honey bees are beneficial to most
agricultural crops, fruit and berry
orchards, as their value for pollina
cannot be overestimated,

Modem coal-preparation plants
very nearly approach the ideal
automatic push-button factories.

Now, in the new Golden Jubilee Model, Ford Tractor
engineers have carried a time-proved hydraulic system
to a new high in speed of response, lifting power,
dependability and wide usefulness.
This Live-Action hydraulic system gives almost
instant action at all times when the tractor engine is
running. It handles larger implements and heavier loads.
And, with Hy-Trol, it acts even faster when desired.
Also possible is an almost unlimited variety of remote
cylinder* operations. In addition to all the time-proved
advantages of the Ford Tractor’s built-in hydraulic
system, you get a choice of hydraulic speeds, quick
hook-up, smooth operation of remote cylinders* and the
ability to handle bigger loads.
The more you learn about the new Ford Tractor the
more you will find that it can bring new ease and speed
to your farming—new economy, too. Come in — look
it over! *Sold separately
