Alternatives For
Cotton Outlined
By State Experts
Cotton farmers desiring to curtail
their 1953 plantings by one-sixth as
requested by Secretary of Agricul
ture Ezra Benson have several possi
ble alternate crops which can be
grown successfully on land already
prepared, a check with Extension
Agronomist speeiaists showed.
Agronomist E. D. Alexander sug
gested corn or soybeans. Corn, sell
ing for $1.50 a bushel in recent
years, can be profitable in certain
cases where good yields are pro
duced. Thickly spaced, well-ferti
lized corn of an adapted variety,
with enough water and rapid, shallow
cultivation, will make good yields.
He also suggested soybeans either
for hay or for oil. Yields of this
crop for oil usually are low, but in
some areas on some land it can make
good returns. Hiay has been in big
demand in recent months, especally
of the quality which soybeans would
produce.
Grain sorghum also presents an
other possibility. It compares favor
ably with corn in feeding value and
not only can be planted later than
corn but also stands dry weather bet
ter than corn. Seed, however, are
not too plentiful.
Annual Lespedeza, either for hay
or seed, could be used on some of
the acres. It also could be planted
on grain successfully.
Some farmers in some areas can
plant truck crops, but lack of markets
might limit this atemative. Market
ing specialist L. E. Farmer pointed
out that whereas Georgia farmers
grossed $112 an acre on cotton, they
grossed $138 on watermelons, $259
on tomatoes, $586 on cabbage, $129
on beans, $273 on sweet potatoes,
and $480 on onions last year.
Secretary Benson has asked cotton
farmers to reduce their 1953 acre
age by 18 per cent or face the possi
bility of marketing quotas in 1954.
Cotton Specialist E. C. Westbrook
recommended that whatever cotton
acreage farmer's decide to plant
should be fitted into a well-balanced
program to make full use of prac
tices to produce large yields an acre
at Low costs such as:
Getting a thick stand.
Using liberal amounts of well-bal
Anced fertilizers.
Follow a recommended program
for control of cotton insects.
Mr. Westbrook warned farmers
against planting too early because
the soi'l must be warm for the seeds
to germinate and grow. He also
recommended , , not . planting 7 j. the .. ,
too deep, preparing the land well be-
