BLAKELY-UNION AT
DISTRICT MEET
A group of Bl.akely-Union High
School students participated in the
Second Dtstrict High School Meet in
Quitman last Friday. They were ac
companied by Mrs. Guy King, Miss
Evelyn DuBose, Miss Annette Alex
andev, Mrs. W. B. Martin, and E. H.
Cheek.
Those winning places were as fol
lows: Girl’s Solo, Jacquelyn Widener,
list place; Home Economics, Barbara
Balk-cam, list place; Girl’s Essay, An
gie Hudspeth, 2nd place; Girl’s Ty
ping, Jacquelyn Widener, 2nd place;
Girl’s Reading, Genda Tiner, 3rd
place; Trio, Jacquelyn Widener, Ann
Martin, and Glenda Tiner, 4th place;
Boy’s Quartette, Diwight Mercer,
Fred Bynum, Harrell White, and Jim
my Temples, 3rd place.
First place in the High School
Hay had been won in the early fall
and counted 1.2 points toward the
score made by Blakely-Union.
Blakely-Uni-on placed fourth in
activities of Second District High
School Meet, this being the highest
record ever made by the school.

ATTENDING PRUDENTIAL
MEETING IN MIAMI
Fourteen members of The Pruden
tial Insurance Company’s Savannah
Agency will attend a two-day busi
ness conference of leading company
representatives at Miami Beach, Fla.,
beginning today (Thursday).
Oscar Whitchard, local representa
tive of The Prudential, will attend
this Conference.
Meeting at the Sea Isle Hotel, the
delegates will join with other lead
ing representatives of Prudential’s
Southern Agencies to discuss cur
rent insurance problems and trends
with Charles W. Campbell, Vice Pres
ident in charge of Prudential's pro
joctet South-Central Home Office at
Jacksonville, Fla., and other com
pany executives.

Highlighting the monthly meeting
of the Blakely F. H. A. chapter on
April 0 were the campaign speeches
given b ; v candidates for offices for
next year. Each candidate gave a
two-minute talk on one of the follow
ing topics: “What F. H. A. Means to
Me,” “An Outstanding Home Project
I Have Carried Out," or “Improving
F. H. A. Next Year.”
Much originality was demonstrated
by the girts in their talks. Diaries,
letters, Negro dialect, and visitors
from other planets were some of the
unusual ideas used by the candidates
to hold their audience spellbound
while they told of various F. H. A.
activities.
Candidates elected to serve as
officers next year were as follows:
President: Martha Jane Rogers.
1st Vice President: Doris Odum.
2nd Vice President: Alice Batch

Chairman of Projects: Christine
Reed.
Chairman of Recreation: Ina
Frances Waller.
The remaining offices will be filled j
next year after new members have i
been initiated into the club.
During the business session the
coming Mother-Daughter BauqueL
and State Convention were discussed.
At the close of the meeting deli
cious refreshments were served by
Regina White, recreation chairman,
and her committee.

On Friday, April 10, the Blakely-;
Union FIFA Quartet entered the Dis
trict Literary meet. The Quartet
won third place in this contest.
On Monday, April 13, the quartet:
and speaker entered the FFA con-!
test. The quartet won second place
and our speaker, Clifford Singletary,
also, won second place. The quartet
consists of Dwight Mercer, first ten
or, Fred Bynum, second tenor, Har
rell White, first bass, and Jimmie
Templets, second bass.

Vivian Brownlee Applies
For Admission to GSC
For Fall Quarter

lee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Idus
