Standards Raised
By VA For Hiring
Vocational Counselors
Atlanta, Ga.—Veterans Adminis
tration today announced it has raised
its hiring standards for vocational
counselors, in a move to assure vet
erans of getting the highest possible
calibre of counseling when they ap
ply for training.
Any new counselors hired will now
have (1) at least two years of grad
uate studies in the fields of counsel
ing or psychology, and (2) at least
two years of experience, in counsel
ing individuals in choosing vocation
al goals and in their problems of
personal adjustment.
VA vocational counselors on the
job before the new standards were j
announced will be encouraged to
take further training to meet the new
standards, VA said.
Vocational counseling is a “must”
for all disabled World War II and
Korean veterans planning to take
vocational rehabilitation training. It
serves the purpose of guiding a man
into a field where he stands the best
chance of making good in spite of |
his handicap. I
The counseling services also are
available to veterans who served since
Korea and who want to enroll in
training under the Korean GI Bill.
Here, too, it can prove invaluable in
getting a veteran off on the right
foot. Under the law, he is permitted
to change his training program no
snore than once. Counseling can
help him choose correctly in the
first place, VA pointed out.
The vocational counseling process
consists of thorough interviews and
tests which serve to reveal a veter
an’s aptitudes, interests and abilities.
This gives greater assurance that
the occupational goal he chooses is
actually suitable for him, and one
that he can reach.
The two years of graduate train
ing now required of VA vocational
counselors must include courses in
personality organization and dynam
ics (such as abnormal psychology
and mental hygiene); counseling
theory and techniques; psychological
tests and measurements, and the
study of occupations (such as job
analysis, occupational information,
labor problems and the like).
The two years of experience must
include work in counseling individ
uals on their problems of personal
adjustment, counseling with respect
to the selection of occupational
goals, and applying special rehabili
tation counseling techniques to the
seriously handicapped.

or three years.
