By EARL “TIGE” PICKLE
To keep a promise, this is a report
on my evening with Miss America,
who goes by the old Southern mon
icker of Neva Jane, and her last name
being Langey, but there must be by
now a million men who would like to
change that part of it to one exactly
like her own.
To those who might have come in
late, or perhaps might not have been
here two weeks ago at all, a little
explanation is in order. I was in
vited to be a judge at a beauty pag
efmt id, Bainbridge, and Miss Amer
ica was there in person to place the
crown on the winner’s lovely brow.
Well, everything went off accord
ing to plan. I was there, of course.
And so was Miss America. Now, dear
r eaders, my vocabulary is limited, and
even if it were not so, I doubt if
there would be sufficient beautiful
adjectives to describe this wonderful
creature. A vision of loveliness. A
charmer. A peaches and cream com:
plexion. Not a tinseled Hollywood
beauty. No trace of the show girl.
Just a sweet, unaffected, poised Geor
gia girl from Florida, doggonit.
She had her hair done and had a
profile almost like our oiwn Miss |
Glenda Tiner, who does all right in
the charm department herself. The

was at ease and poised as a veteran j
trouper. I
And now to the beys, who ask if I
got real close to her. Well, I got as
close as a married man, accompanied
by his wife,-could possibly get. I
shook hands with her.
Being the life of the party has
made many a man feel like he was
dead the next day.
A 92-year-old Negro man took un
to himself a 79-year-old bride here
this week end.

your own comment.

A fellow was telling- me about a
dream he had. Said in his dream a
new doctor who could make old men
young- opened an office across the
street from him and pretty soon he
the doctor both got rich.' I ask
ed him if he learned the doctor’s se
cret and opened an office, too. Said
no. he tore down his business and
built a parking lot.
Blessed are those who knoweth
when to close their mouths. They
don’t have to go on a diet.
If the meek do inherit the earth,
Senator McCarthy won’t have enough
land on whi-ch to erect a May pole.
This is the season of violets and
honeysuckles, Mayhaws and cotton
chopping, and when high school grad
uates begin thinking that if a certain
hoy or girl doesn’t attend the same
school next year, the end of the
world will have arrived.
From the looks of things here
abouts, it seems that pretty soon car
manuifacurers will have to place
fishing pole holders on their autos as
standard equipment.
Cotton is the nation’s most valua
ble cash crop and the only major
crop producing fiber, food and feed.
