,V. F. W. STATE COM’DER SPEAKS TO ROTARIANS A young Albany attorney who is the state commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars, was the speak- j er at last week’s meeting of the Blakely Rotary Club. He Is Asa D. Kelley, Jr., who in addition to being state commander is also a member of the National j Council of Administration V. F. W„ ! former , post , commander , at , Albany, A ,i „, r a and for two years was judge advo cate of the Georgia department. Mr. Kelley’s highly interesting and informative talk was devoted in a large measure to a discussion of the principles and objectives of the V. F. W. organization. These he outlined under three headings, (1) Dedication to the vetei’ans, particu larly the disabled, and widows and children of deceased veterans; (2) Dedication to the communities in which we live; and (3) Dedication to the United States of America. He discussed the efforts being made by V. F. W. members toward carrying out these objectives. He stated that the Georgia department now has 3 7,500 members, 'but that there are 229,000 in this state eligible for membership. Introduced by Rotarian Alvan Fleming, program chairman, Mr. Kelley’s talk Was well received and he received hearty applause from the club members at its conclusion. Other visitors at the meeting in cluded Joe Pittman, commander of Dwight Floyd Pyle Post No. 5259 of Blakely, a guest of Rotarian Tommy Tompkins, Mrs. E. P. Whitehead and Mrs. C. G. Brewer, who were also guests of Rotarian Tommy Tompkins. They were at the club in the interest of the 'big parade staged that after noon in behalf of the city clean-up campaign, a part of the Champion Home Town Contest, President Richard Grist presicied over the meeting. Official Of State Health Dept. Woman’s Club Speaker Felix C. Pickron, of Albany, Re gional Engineer of the State Depart ment ed Public Health, was speaker at the recent meeting of th Blakely Woman’s Club and spoke on “What Is a Health Department?” He .pointed out the basic services rendered by and the advantages of a completely staffed department and the import ance of having adequate quarters. Mr. Pickron explained the duties of a sanitary engineer, and reminded the cluib members that Early county had been placed on the waiting list for one, but due to lack of space could not have this officer. He stated that Early county officials have been ad vised of the detals of securing state and federal assistance and the cost of a new modern Health Center, completely equipped. The cost to the county would he one-third of the complete cost. Another feature of the program at this meeting was the last study on the Club Collect, by Mary Stewart, given by Mrs. Oscar Whitchard. Mrs. E. P. Whitehead, president, announced the appointment of the following committees for the year: American Home, Mrs. R. C. Single tary, Jr.; Communications, Mrs. C A. Grubbs; Conservation, Mrs, D. L. Maxwell; Education, Mrs. Oscar. Whitchard: Fine Arts, Mrs. Philip; Spence; Imternatoinal Affairs, Mrs. S. G. Maddox, Jr.; Welfare, Mrs. J. M. Middleton; Tallulah Falls, Mrs. Rob inson McLendon; Finance, Mrs. S. W. Tompkins; Clubhouse, Mrs. C. G. Brewer. The Year Book Committee, is composed of Mrs. R. A. Houston, Mrs. Robinson McLendon, Mrs. Bar ney Wynne, and Mrs. Fred Brooks. Mrs. Whitehead thanked the com mittee for arranging the luncheon ta ble at the Flower Show. Mrs. W. A. Fuqua. Mrs. S. G. Maddox, Jr., and Mrs. J. A. Hammack served on this committee. asked Members of the club were to participate in the parade begin ning “Clean-up, Paint-up, Fix-up and Light-yp” week in Blakely. Appreciation was expressed by the president for Mrs. H. H. Brinson us a loyal and helpful member of | the club and good wishes were ex tended to her as she moves into an other town. Sandwiches and an iced drink were served by Mrs. W. R. McKinney, Mrs. E. S. Boyett, Mrs. V. L. Collins, i Mrs. J. A. Hammack, Mrs. A. H. Gray, Mrs. W. C. Baxley, and Mrs. ■ Fletcher Thompson, hostesses for the afternoon. Officers for next year are: Mrs. E. P. Whitehead, president; Mrs. Ed ward Scaly, 1st vice president; Mrs. Dunbar Grist, 2nd vice Mrs. E. W. Yarn ell, recording secre tary; Mrs. Mobley Howell, corre sponding secretary; Mrs. C. G. Brew er, president; Mrs. Robinson McLen don, parliamentarian. BLAKELY TO PLAY KOREA HERE SUNDAY AFTERNOON Son Jones’ Blakely team will play Korea here Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. This is the first league game of the season. Blakely, Korea, Griggs. Hilton and Columbia have formed a little league which they are calling the Georgia-Alabama league. MR. W. G. WINGATE PASSES AT HIS HOME IN ELLIJAY, GA. William Gordon Wingate, age 56, of Ellijay, Ga., veteran of World War j an< j na ti V e of Camilla, passed out j n pi s s i eep a t, his home about 1 a. m o’clock Thursday of a complica tion of ailments. He was a member of the Ellijay Methodist Church, the Board of Ed and the Lions Club. He was owner 0 f Mountain View Orchards, growing several varieties of north Georgia apples and having his own packing shed, grader, and cold stor afi , u> aiM j wag especially interested in his growing cattle herd, Funeral services were held Friday morning at 11 o'clock in the funeral chapel at Ellijay, with the local minister in charge, and interment was in Camilla cemetery Saturday morn ing at 11 o’clock, with the Revs. Dun can and Williams officiating. Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Kate Mosely; a son, W. G., Jr., and a daughter, Mrs. Alwyn Stiles, of Athens; one grandson and five grand daughters. 'Mrs. Wingate’s sister, Mrs. John Underwood, accompanied by her sis ter, Mrs. J. C. Pigott, and niece, Mrs. Alethia Dickson, of Panacea Springs, attended the funeral service of Mr. Wingate in Ellijay Friday morn ing, and among those attending the service and interment in Camilla Sat urday were Mr. and Mrs. John Un derwood, Mr. C. Monday saved the life of L. L. Hightower at Kolomoki Park. Mr. Hightower, who was accom panied by his wife, was fishing in the lake when their boat overturned. Mrs, Hightower began immediately to swim toward shore, but her husband was unable to swim. Ediward Gray, a local business man, observed the accident and ran for a life preserver.
