Duration Of Vet’s
Education Or
Training Explained
Atlanta, Ga.—Every veteran who
has served after June 27, 1950, may
be eligible for a period of basic en
titlement to education or training
under Public Law 550, 82nd Con
, gress, measured in months and days
(or the equivalent thereof in part
time training), William K. Barrett,
director of the State Department of
Veterans Service, said today.
Barrett stated that the basic en
titlement shall be computed by mul
tiplying one and one-half times the
duration of the veteran's active serv
ice, whether performed in one or
more active duty assignments during
the basic service period. In comput
ing the duration of his active serv
ice, the following periods of time wil
be excluded:
(1) The extent of any period or
periods during which he was assigned
by the Armed Forces to a civilian
institution for a course of education
or training which was substantially
the same as established sources of
fered by the institution to civilians,
(2) The extent of any period or
periods duning which he was a cadet
or midshipman at one of the service
academies (U.S. Military Academy,
West Point, N. Y.; U, S, Naval Acade
my, Annapolis, Md.; U. S. Coast
Guand Academy, New London,
Conn.).
(3) The extent of any period or
periods of agricultural, industrial, or
indefinite furlough; time under ar
rest in the shsence of acquittal;
time for which the individual was
determined to have forfeited pay by
reason of absence without leave, and
time apent in desertion or while
undergoing sentence of court martial.
Time lost through intemperate use
of drugs or alcoholic liquor or
through disease or inury the result
of the person’s own misconduct shall
not be excluded in such computa
tion,
The period of time during which
education or training may be pur.
sued under Public Law 550, 82nd
Congress, shall not exceed 36 months
in any case, except where extension
of entitlement is in order and in such
event, entitlement will terminate at
the end of such period of extension.

fice of the State Department of Vet
erans Service for advice and assist
ance. The nearest branch office is

The Senior Class of Blakely-Union
High School held its first meeting
September 10, 1953, in Miss Annette
Alexander's room,
Bill Barksdale, former president,
called the class to order.
The “high-lite” of the meeting was
the election of officers. The new
slate of officers reads: President.
Doris Odum; vice president, Norman
Smith: secretary, Wynette Hayes;
treasurer, Harvey Woolf: reporter,
Mary Frances Owen,
There was a short discussion on
selling pansy plants, which will be a
moneymaking project this r.r.
Members of the class will go from
house to house taking orders for the
pansies within the next few weeks,
The class decided to elect a finance
chairman at the next meeting, The
duty of this officer will be to decide
on ‘r::‘kch for this year,
was no further business, so
the meeting was adjourned.
