Heavy Rains Endanger
Estimated $60,000,000
Georgia Peanut Crop
H. L. Wingate, Georgia Farm Bu
reau Federation president, in a
statement veleased today, cautioned
peanut formers to handle tha arap
with extreme care in an effort to
hold loss.s to a minimum, Peanut
warehousemen reported movement to
the market at a standstill,
Warehousemen, under the Joan
program, are not this year limited
to moisture content on peanut ac
ceptance. Farmers, however, are
penalized increasingly as the mois
ture content passes 7 per cent, Ware
housemen are using their own judg
ment as to maximum moisture con
tent under which they feel peanust
may be kept successfully ‘n storage,
and some have expressed a fear at
attempting to store the nuts con
taining a moisture content greater
than 10 per cent, |
Unless fair, windy weather now
prevails, some peanuts may not dry
out sufficiently. In such event, a
serious storage situation could de
velop. Present indications are that
some peanuts in stack will spoil be
fore they dry out.
Wingate emphasized that peanut
farmers before attempting to thresh
out nuts, should first pick a repre
sentative sample and have a mois
ture content run., “The moisture
content level may be determined at
any point of purchase,” he said. By
going to this extra trouble the indi
vidua! farmer can then determine
whether there is a chance that the
nuts may dry to a lower moisture
content. By allowing the nuts to
dry in the field both quality and
price will be increased. )
The 1953 Georgia peanut crop
has been estimated at slightly above
243,000 tons compared with a
1952 production of 202,000 tons. |
