000 farm residents in the Unlud‘
States lost their lives as a result of
some sort of farm accident. Ap
proximately 1,200,000 additional sus-“
tained injuries, |
Increasing use of farm machinery,
it is believed, may be a cause of
the high death rate. There were
about 700 fatal and about 25,000
non-fatal acedents involving farm
wheel tractors in the nation in 1952,
More than half of these were from
overturned tractors. Such accidents
follow a familiar pattern—tractors
were driven down too steep slopes,
too near the sides of embankments,
and into creek beds. Tractor driving
in such places has been proven a
hazardous undertaking, 1
EARLY COUNTY NEWS. RBRLAKELY, GEORGIA
Farming, too, is particularly haz
ardous to children who are permitted
to be near operating machinery.
Small children are not any more
qualified to handle a tractor safely
than to operate a high-powered au
tomobile, yet many of them are al
lowed to do so.
There is no special set of circum
stances that causes fatal accidents.
The same unsafe practices that show
up in minor accidents occur in about
the same frequency in fatal acci
dents. Only by chance is it true
that every accident is not a fatal
one,
The record of traffic accidents in
rural areas is also very high. Forty
one per cent of the drivers involved
in rural traffic accidents .in Georgia
in 1951 were also rural residents.
Seventy-two per cent of the drivers
involved in such accidents lived with
in 26 miles of the scene.
It is important for farmers to
know safety facts and fallacies. Such
knowledge is just as important a
preventive measure as vaccination
against smallpox or purification of
drinking water., —=~ Georgia Heath
