Georgia Observes
Tree Appreciation
Day December 10
Georgia 4-H'ers, who last year
carried 1,100 forestry projects and
this year are expected to carry 1,600,
are living up to their slogan about
making the best better by staging
a “Tree Appreciation Day”, Decem
ber 10,
On that day they will help dis
tribute two and one half million
trees, and the goal for the day is
that every school child in Georgia
shall receive and plant one tree,
To help with the giant problem
of distributing so many trees, 4-Hers
are enlisting the help of their
friends: The Georgia Bankers As
sociation, Garaden Clubs of Georgia,
Farm Bureau Associated Woman's
Clubs, Home Demonstration Clubs
and the Georgia Forestry Commin-i
sion. ‘
C. Dorsey Dyer, University of
Georgia Agricultural Extension SQrV-i
ice forester, says the special day
will speed the planting of trees on
the three million acres available in
Georgia for that purpose.
Millions of trees are made avail
able to 4-H’ers every year free of
charge. The Georgia Forestry Com
mission is producing one hundred
million in the state nursery this year,
and anyone interested can purchase
enough seedlings for an acre for
about $3, Dyer states.
Trees for the 4-H Tree Appre
ciation Day will be donated by: The
Union Bag and Paper Corporation
of Savannah; the Macon Kraft Com
pany; the Rome Kraft Company;
International Paper Company with
representatives in Waycross and Al
bany; and the Brunswick Pulp and
Paper Company.
