Exact Location Of
Statue Of Liberty
Stirs Legal Fight
Where is the Statue of Liberty?
Every American patriot knows the
great lady stands in New York Har
hor.
But is she in the State of New
York or in New Jersey?
Mrs, Evelyn Hill, who operates a
food and souvenir stand on Bedloe's
Island, site of the statue, brought the
matter to court,
She contends the island is in New
Jersey and New York City had no
right to collect $2,808 in business
and sales taxes from her.
To support her claim, attorney
Vietor R, Wolder dug deep into the
past, starting with grants by the
Duke of York and and Charles II in
1664,
He said scraps over the New York-
New Jersey boundary in 1807 and
1827 were settled with an agreement
in 1828 putting the New Jersey
boundary west of the middle of the
Hudson River and the hgrbor.
“It is undisputed,” he proclaimed,
“that Bedloe's Island is west of the
middle.’
But a New York City counsel,
Stanley Buchsbaum, argued the 1838
agreement says plainly that New
York State “shall retain its present
jurisdiction of and over Bedloe's
Island.” :
Furthermore, island resident votes
are counted in New York, he said.
There was wrangling over wheth
er maps showed the statute in New
York or New Jersey—all of which
seemed to boil down to a matter of
which map you prefer.
State Supreme Court Judge Thom
