Good Records Can |
Steer Farmers To
Higher Profits
By W. Tapp Bennett, Director Agri
cultural Development Department
Central of Georgia Railway.
The many problems which our
farmers will face during 1954 make
it more necessary than ever that
every precaution be taken to in
sure a profit from each operation
on the farm. .
One of the most important prob
lems to be solved is the pmlhble!
use of high-priced farm labor.
Wherever hired labor is employed
on a farm. it should be wused on
those projects which will return the
highest rate for the labor expended.
For instance, there is the story of |
a farmer whé believed in hoplul
farm records and ablancing his proj- |
eots accordingly. Analyzing his
books, he found that his labor was
being pald for at the rate of $1.30
per hour by dairy cows, $3.30 an
hour by hogs, and $4.00 an hour by
chickens. The important point of
this story is that the farmer kept
records and found in them the an
swer to his future plans,
Present-day farming is a busines
of large investment and heavy an
nual expenses. Good business meth
ods must be followed to make a
success of farming and good ac
counting is necessary for any sound
business. And that means good
farm records. Farming has become
far more than just plowing, planting
and harvesting crops and feeding
livestock. Even large crop ylelds
and good livestock give a farmer no
advantage unless his operation s
balanced to give a good margin of
profit between cost and income.
Farm records are to a farmer
what the rudder is to a ship and ov
ery farm operator in 1054 should
start the year by setting up com
plete records to be kept throughout
the year so that he may know which
of his projects are the most prof
table.
County agents will gladly assist
farmers in seiting up a system to be
followed which is be:t adapted to cach
individual farm and obtaining suit
able record forms
CATTLE INDUSTRY TESTED
The young beef cattle industry in
Georgia was subjected to ils sever
st test in 1053, according to cattle
experts. They say that the year
has been marked by extremely low
cattle prices and long periods of
drought, and that these conditions
have created a problem, especially
for the producers who established
theirherds during a peried of In
slated prices.
