Can Look Forward
To ’54 With Optimism,
Opinion Of Huiet
Atlanta, Ga.—"“With nearly 1 mil
lion workers, earning approximately
3 billion dollars annually in Georgia,
we should hold our chins up and
look te 19564 with a great deal of
optimism,” said Labor Commissioner
Ben T. Huiet today, in summing up
the States economic situation for“
the beginning of the New Year, !
“Total wages and salaries of Geor
gia workers soared to more thanl
100 million dollars over 1952 nnd;
amounted to 85 per cent more than|
during the highest war year. The|
1953 figure, an all-time high in Geor-‘i
gia, was over 2.8 billion dollars and |
more than 4 1-2 times the total fot]
the year 1940.” Huiet pointed out)
that non-farm employment in the |
state has expanded rapidly for three"
yeas, reaching a peak level in the late |
summer. It now stands at approxi-|
mately 915,000, ;
“The increased tempo of indus
trinl development in the State is re
flected in the new plants already
under construction and others still
in the planning stages. Georgia's
many natural advantages assure a
continued flow of new and expand
ed activities and past growth has
been steady and substantial,” the
Commissioner said.
“Pay checks to the tune of nearly
3 billion dollars to approximately 1
million Georgia workers during the
past 12 months, to say the least,
sounds & note of optimism and hope
for the Now Year,” Huiet concluded.

The fertilizer supply for the 19563.

this time, v, H. D, Morris, profes
sor of agronomy at the University of
Georgia, said this week.
“Since there are frequently spot
shortages of certain favored mate
rials, even in a year of good overall
supply,” Morris ponted out, *“l'd like
to remind Georgia farmers that the
best way to be sure of . having the
right type and the desired amount
of fertilizer available when it s
needed is to order carly.” Fertilizser
can be stored safely in any dry
place, he added.
Morris sald that indications are
that supply of fertilizer for the 1953.

cent over the total avallable during
the last growing season. The

two million tons, phosphates two and

1954 EGG PRICES ‘
Egg prices in the spring of 1954
are likely to be almost as high as in
corresponding months of 19563,
poultry specialists declare. They
point out that some of the same fac
