You made us pull on seven-league boots! Giant steps
were necessary to meet your fast-growing demand for
electric power. Everyone in Georgia is using more elec
tricity, in homes, on farms, in business and industry.
But planning engineers look ahead. In the past seven
years we have built five great new power plants, ex
panded other plants, more than doubled total generating
capacity.
Plant Mitchell at Albany was the first of the new
plants to serve you. Quickly following were Plant Yates,
Newnan; Plant McManus, Brunswick; Sinclair Dam,
Milledgeville, and Plant Hammond, Rome.
There's plenty of power in your future, too! Then,
as now, electricity will be abundant, dependable and
reasonably priced. Then, more than ever, you will look
to electricity for better living.

Changes In Your
. .
Social Security
(By Victor Manget, Manager of The
Albany, Ga,, Social Security Office)
I'll be receiving thousands of ques
tions about social security because of
the 1954 Amendments to the Social
Security Act, signed this summ?-' by
President Eisenhower, However, I'm
afraid many people with questions
won't visit our office, so I am going to
answer some of those unasked ques
tions in this series of articles.
It is difficult to realize that so many
people know so little about something
that is as important to them as their
social security. But I find that this is
true in many cases. Common sense
tells us the importance of translating
the technicalities of the social security
law and its changes into the thought
and life of the American people. 1
feel that this is my duty as your social
security representative,
In this series of articles on the old
age and survivors insurance program,
I shall describe the recent changes in
the social security law as they will
directly affect each and every one of
us. I do this with the sincere hope
that you will gain a more complete
' understanding of your social security
‘and its effects on you and your family,
‘ When Congress proposed and enact
‘ed the new amendments, it did so
with its main view towards bringing
social security insurance benefits bet
ter in line with current earning lev
els and living costs. And just as im
portant are the parts of the law
which extend the coverage of social
security to more people, and in this
way make benefits available to more
workers in their retirement and to
their families when they die. |
To accomplish this end, the changes
in the law ha#l to have two objecflm‘
First, social security protection had to
|be extended to more types of jobs so
| that a greater number of people could
lpnruclpate and through their contrt-‘
'butions quality for social securtiy
|beneflu. This was written into the
new law, and now nearly nine out of
‘ten workers are included under the
| program. And of about 63 million jobs
in the nation and abroad, over 55 mil
lion are now covered by social se
'cumy. |
The second objective was that of
giving increased benefits to those 11-‘
ready receiving old-age and survivors
insurance payments as well as to those I
who will be getting them in the fu-|
ture. Three important points under
the increased benefits are the increase
in the amount of wages which will be
counted for social security purposes;
a drop-out of low or no earning m.i
and a revised formula for computing
benefit amounts. Another important
provision in the new law is the pro
tection of insured status and benefit|
amounts for those who are totally
disabled. |
This may be & good place to point
out that old-age and survivors bene
fits are payable only to persons who
have worked for a specified length of
time in employment or self-emp oy~
’ment covered by social security and to
‘the qualified dependents of such work
ers. Social Security benefits are paid
out of a trust fund built up entirely
from the contributions of covered
employees and their employers and
of covered self-employed persons, plus
accumulated interest. Thus the financ
ing of the system is completely self
supporting,
In this article I have sketched the
full scope of the social security law as
a huge picture, Later I shall paint a
small portrait of just one phase of the
new amendments to the law,
In Loving Memory Of Our
Baby, Linda Faye
(Daughter of Mr, and Mrs, Emory
Durham)
Our little baby has gone away to rest
in another land,
We will no more see her smiling face
or clasp her precious hand
God needed one more rose to brighten
His bouquet
And so he sent an angel down to the
hospital where she lay.
The angel toucher her brow, then
softly to her said,
“You have won the race, come go with
. me and leave this tiresome bed.”
It was on the twenty-first of Septetm
ber about the hour of twelve
Her spirit with the angel left, to rest
in peace sublime.
Up there she will know no sorrow, no
suffering nor pain.
All of peace and happiness is her eter
nal gain,
She used to ride the races here and
many of them won,
But Fate decreed at thirteen months
her racing here was done.
We laid her body down to rest among
loved ones gone before,
And some day we'll go to meet her, she
will be waiting at Heaven's door.
When I raise my eyes toward heaven
I can almost see her there
As she beckons to me from afar, so
beautiful and so fair.
I know the Lord does all things well
and yet I'm wondering why |
Our precious baby had to go and leave
us mourning, standing by.
—Her Heartbroken Granddaddy
Durham.
