Georgia Joins <
Traffic Contest
On Child Safety
Three times as many children are
killed or injured by automobiles dur
ing the spring and summer as during
the other half of the year.
This brings a warning from the
Georgia Motor Club for parents to
keep close watch over their small
children,
L. 8. Langsworthy, safety director of
the club, said summer months are far
the most dangerous from the stand
point of pedestrian traffic accidents
‘lnvolvinx children less than 10 years
old. \
‘ The opposite is true for teen-age and
adult pedestrians, he said.
~ Georgia, under sponsorship of the
Georgia Motor Club (AAA), is partic
ipating for the first time in a contest
which revealed these facts. The state
of Georgia and various cities within
Georgia will submit reports to the
AAA on their records and activities in
the field of pedestrian safety and com
pete with other communities of like
size for national honors. }
Mr. Langworthy said the reason tor;
the sharp rise in frequency of traffic
accidents involving young children are:
1. Greater exposure to traffic
brought about by longer hours spent
~ Lack of parental control and train
ing. |
3. Insufficient fenced-in, supervised
play areas. i
4. Lack of protection such as is of
fered by School Safety Patrol boys
and girls during the school term.
