Nation-Wide Civil
Defense Exercise Set
\
For June 15-16
Georgia's entire Civil Defense com
mand structure at all levels—state,
county, and city—will go into contin
uous 26-hour operation beginning at
11:00 a. m, Wednesday, June 15, as part
of the second national “Operation
Alert” training exercise by the Feder
al Civil Defense Administration June
15 and 16, according to Major General
George J. Hearn, Director, Georgia
Civil Defense Division,
The nation-wide exercise will be
based on theoretical hits on more than
50 target eities throughout the nation
—at least one in the State of Georgia
—by nuclear explosions ranging in
power from 20 kiloton atomic bombs
to 5 megaton H-bombs. In addition to
known hits, the exercises will include
the surprise “bombing” of one or
more target areas in each FCDA re
gion, Georgia is located in FCDA Re
gion I, which includes seven south
eastern states. |
In order to squeeze a simulated nine
day operation into the 26 hours of the
exercise, each civil defense office in|
the state that is participating will'
prepare in advance a series of as- |
sumptions of damage, casualties, etc.
During the exercise all State Civil
Defense personnel and many other |
State agencies’ civil defense repre
sentatives will be working in shifts
All lines of communication, including
telephone, teletype, radio networks, |
and amateur radio will be activated.
Existing resources stockpiled for civil |
defense in the State will be “utilized” |
in the problem. !
General Hearn listed the following |
purposes and objectives of the exer-|
cise: (1) To increase awareness of the;
supporting roles of unattacked cities |
and counties; (2) To increase public
knowledge and training in mrvw-l;!
(3 To provide training for civil de
fense personnel; (4) To test publug
warning methods, local plans, and lo- |
cal readiness; (5) To test operational
changes that have been made in the
past year, and to determine additional
requirements, |
Washington, D. C.-~The American
Medical Association says science may
be on the brink of “a new and success

of mental liness”
Dr. Leo H. Bartemeler, chairman of
the AMA council on mental health,
said the new approach does not rely
on the mental hospital “as the primary
tool for treating the mentally 1"
Too often, he said, “these institutions
are nothing more than mental ‘pest

indefinitely with slight hope of cure”
Bartemeler gave his views in testi.

YOUNG KING JOSIAH
Lesson for June 12: II Corinthians
34:-1-12 a,
Golden Text: Psalms 119:9,
The good king Josiah was pious
from his earliest days. Brought to the
throne at the age of eight, following
the murder of his father, Amon, the
lad soon gave attention to his own
religious needs. Remarkably for his
age, he gave serious and earnest
thought to spiritual things and his
own relation to God, during the first
four years of his reign. And he re
mained a good king to his untimely
death in battle,
At the age of twelve, Josiah began
the work of purging Jerusalem and
the kingdom of the places and objects
of heathen worship. Then he turned
his attention to the repair of the tem
ple and to put it in the condition such
a holy building should have. It was
in the eighteenth year of his reign
that Josiah began the repairs by or
dering the raising of funds for the
work. The money was put in the
hands of Hilkiah, the high priest, who,
with his associates, carried out the
repairs. It is said that the men em
ployed “did the work faithfully.”
This reform carried out by Josiah
was seemingly more thorough than
the reform under Hezekiah. And the
young king is a good model for young
people of the present. There was nev
er a period when the faithful ruler
went into sin-—all his life he strove to
live well and to lead his people in the
right way. Truly a great king he was,
and it was a tragedy that he was, be
fore the age of forty, slain in battle
with the Pharaoh of Egypt.
~ Within the last decade the number
of farm tractors has increased six
times in the Southeast, while in the
rest of the nation the increase has
been only one and one-half times.
