Nearly 100 counties have entered the
1955 Georgia five-acre cotton contest,
and more than 1,000 farmers in these
counties will compete for $3,500 in
prizes offered in the contest,
Conducted by the Agricultural Ex
tension Service and sponsored finan
clally by the Georgia Cottonseed
Crushers Association, the five-acre cot-\
ton contest has been held annually
since 1947,
E. C. Westbrook, Agricultural Exten
sion Service agronomist at Athens,
said this week that “cotton has made
satisfactory growth in recent weeks
and prospects are good in most coun
ties."” He cautioned that recent
rains are increasing the numbers of
boll weevils attacking cotton fields.
Referring to the five-acre contest,
Westbrook said that the state winner
will receive a SSO cash award. If the
winning yield tops those of any pre
vious year an additional SSOO will be
given.
The contest is divided into six dis
tricts. Prizes by districts are: First,
$250; second, $150; and third, SIOO.
County agents in the various coun
ties work with farmers on this con
test. Westbrook stated that boll counts
showing yields will be completed in
the South Georgia districts by August
15. .
The winner of the 1954 five-acre cot
ton contest was C. T. Cagle, Bartow
county tenant farmer, who produced
19346 pounds of seed cotton on five
acres. |

“MILLER BILL” IN EFFECT
The “Miller Bill” became effective
July 22. This is an amendment to the
Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
It is designed to protect the public
from harmful residues on agricultural
food products. It applies to all raw
fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, eggs,
meat, raw milk, and similar produce.
Interstate shipments of such products
are subject to Federal inspection. Ship
ments containing residues of poisonous
pesticides beyond certain “tolerances”
may be confiscated or condemned for
use as human food.

“signed up” to attend the National
Home Demonstration Council meeting
