‘ Jesus Proclaims His Mission,
| Lesson for October 30: Luke 4:16-24,
28-30.
‘ Golden Text: Luke 4:18-19,
| In this record, referred to in a pre-
Icedlng lesson, Jesus had come to his
| home-town and had, “as his custom
was,” gone into the synagogue on the
tSlbblth. After the reading of the
!pretcribed portion of the Mosaic law,
Jesus, as a visiting teacher, was in
| vited to read, and the book of Isaiah
| was given him,
i The Lord read from Isaiah concern
|£n¢ the Servant of Jehovah, He then
| declared himself to be the fulfillment
'of the prophecy, identifying himself
'with the Servant of whom Isaiah
~wrote. Thus did Jesus proclaim him
'self as the long-promised Messiah.
' Bigotry and hardness of heart and
' self-righteousness led the rulers of
the synagofiue and the people to
withhold any sympathetic response to
‘the announcement that Jesus made.
Instead they were filled with wrath,
and they arose and cast him out of the
house of worship, intending to hurl
him down a steep bluff. But he, pass
ing through their midst, went his way.
It is not indicated whether or not his
escape was a miracle.
Thus Jesus “came unto his own, and
his own received him not” But his
announcement of Messiahship has been
heard around the world, and we do
well to hear it with joy today.
