EARLY COUNTY NEWS, BLAKELY, GEORGIA
PRINCIPLES OF
GOOD DESIGN ARE
TAUGHT IN PROJECT
One “do-it-yourself” venture grow
ing out of the post-war building boom
has been landscaping lawns, outdoor
eating areas, and grounds of new
homes.
Citing Georgia's good climate for
outdoor living and gardening, T. G.
Williams, landscape specialist, Agricul
tural Extension Service, says interest
in these activities is at a high pitch
right now.
“It isn't possible to put a monetary
wvalue on attractive and useful home
surroundings, but good landscaping can
increase the real estate value of a
home by as much as ten to 25 per
cent,” the University of Georgia Col
lege of Agriculture specialist stated.
Group meetings, clinics, workshops,
demonstrations, and short courses have
been conducted by the Extension Serv
ice, through its county and home dem
onstration agents in an effort to im
prove the looks of homes through
teaching good design principles.
Twenty to twenty-five thousand fam
ilies are assisted with landscape prob
lems every year, Williams reported.
He said 15,000 to 20,000 Four-H Club
members also are given instruction in
these principles through their home
beautification project. ‘
Bulletins, circulars, and mimeograph
papers on landscaping are distributed
through Extension agents. Slide and
chart demonstrations are used by
specialists to teach landscape design
10 Home Demonstration and 4-H Clubs
and for special programs presented for
garden clubs, farm bureau chapters,
and other organizations,
“Improved landscaping of church
and home grounds has been an import
ant phase of various community clubs
in operation in Georgia,” Williams said.
“Through educational meetings and
demonstrations, good examples of land
scaping are increasing in homes all
over the state.”
FREEMAN H. D. CLUB
The Freeman Home Demonstration
Club met on Monday, September 23,
at the home of Mrs. J. L. Jones. The
meeting was called to order by the
president. After the devotional+ the
roll was called, 14 members answer
ing, with two visitors. "
During the business session plans
and committees were appointed con
cerning Achievement Day. Each mem
ber brought something and these Were‘
turned over to the project chairman.
Other business matters were attended

Use Care In Purchasing
Grass Seed Mixtures For
Winter Lawns - Campbell
‘ Home owners should use care in
purchasing grass seed mixtures for
the purpose of planting winter lawns,
;Commluloner of Agriculture Phil
Campbell warns,
| Campbell said home owners should
!make sure just what is in a grass seed
mixture before making their purchase,
He added that persons buying such
seed should also check the tag or
'printing on the container to determine
‘the germination percentage of seed
‘contained in the mixture,
| “Rye grass is fine for planting in the
‘fall but rye grass is rather cheap and
‘home owners should not pay high
‘prices for mixtures that contain a
large amount of rye grass seed.”
i The Commissioner warned also that
perennial rye grass acts as an annual
'in this area and said buyers of grass
'seed mixtures should consider peren
‘nial as well as annual rye grass seed
as the total amount of rye grass in a
‘mixture,
Under state law all such agricultural
seed sold should not germinate less
than 70 per cent. The germination
percentage must be printed on the
seed tag or on the container and
should be checked before purchasing
any agricultural seed.
A traffic violation is involved in 90
per cent of all traffic accidents. Speed
ing accounts for 30 per cent; driving
‘under the influence, 25 per cent, and
,mechanical failures, 10 per cent. The

tension Service engineers. -

TRANSPLANTING
T. G. Williams, landscape specialist
for the Agricultural Extension Service,
says it is best to choose small plants
for transplanting. They are much
easier to handle and a better root
system is obtained. When a large tree
or shrub is moved the feeder roots
are greatly reduced, no matter how
much care is taken. That means that
a great number of these large plants
will die from lack of an adequate
feeder root system.
