National Employ The
Handicapped Week
Set For Oct. 6-12
National Employ the Handicapped
Week is to be observed in Blakely Oc
tober 6-12, at which time this program
will be promoted throughout the na
tion for the thirteepth year. Presi
dent Eisenhower and Governor Griffin
have appointed national and state
committees which promote employ
ment of the handicapped throughout
the year.
Mayor George Gee has issued a
proclamation designating next week as
Employ the Handicapped Week in
Blakely and has appointed a commit
tee to promote this activity during the
next year. Members of the committee
are Tom Morgan, chairman, Edsel Bry
an, Earl Pickle, Rev. W. H. Ansley,
and J. T. Manry.
The general public and employers
are being urged to recognize the fact
that the handicapped deserve and de
sire an opportunity to work, achieve,
and to earn a living to the best of
their ability and that many jobs may
be filled very efficiently by handi
capped persons.
One study of 11,000 handicaped
workers as compared to 18,000 non
handicapped workers showed that the
production, attendance, and safety rec
ords of the handicapped workers were
better than the records of the normal
group.
The Georgia State Employment Serv
ice, the Veterans Service Office, and
the Division of Vocational Rehabilita
tion offer aid to handicaped persons
seeking employment and to employers
who need the services of efficient work
ers. The Early County Welfare and
Health Departments refer many disa
bled persons to other agencies which
may help the handicapped.
Last year 5236 handicapped Geor
gians returned to employment as a re
sult of training, medical services, pros
thetic appliances, or other services ren
dered by the Division of Vocational
Rehabilitation. Most of these persons
were dependent on families or welfare
agnecies, but now they are self-sup
porting, tax-paying workers.

JUNIOR TRI-HI-Y CLUB
The Junior Tri-Hi-Y Club held its
first meeting of the school year on
Wednesday afternoon, September 25,
1957, with 51 members. The meeting
was called to order by Kay Still,
president. The various obligations ac
cepted upon becoming members of the
club were given by the vice president,
Eugenia Smith; secretary, Laura Un
derwood; treasurer, Sylvia Rogers;
and sponsor, Mrs. J. R. Puckett.
Our constitution was read and the
Ten-Point Efficiency Program was dis
cussed.
During the month of September the
club sponsored a good sportsmanship
campaign at school. For a community
project the members voted to visit
shut-ins. Other major projects for the
next few months were discussed.
We feel that our club has made a
good beginning and will accomplish
many worthwhile things.
