EARLY COUNTY NEWS, BLAKELY, GEORGIA
fjlm /I/(/eeé
By EARL “TIGE” PICKLE
Rare indeed is the day around Blake-{
ly when somebody isn't conducting a
fund raising drive, soliciting contribu-J
tions, staging a benefit dinner or sell
ing magazines. Many are the ways and
means which have been invented, and
originated, to separate a man from his
money. Sometimes I am of the opinion
that we are going to be “good caused”
to death.
N
Another thing with which our town
is over-inflicted—and that is clubs and
organizations. You can hardly stick
out your hand to shake hands with
a friend, but what some citizen will
slap a membership card in it and
advise you that you are now a member
of the “Do-right” or “Do-nothing” club
or some other asinine name, and order
you to come to the dinner meeting
every third Thursday or Tuesday at
noon or some other selected date. if
a person went to every meeting he is
supposed, or requested or invited to
attend, I'll guarantee you about the
only time he or she would have for
sleeping would be between the hours
of mid-night and 6 or 7 a. m., because
these club meetings long ago took up
all the lunch and supper spots, and
has now spread to breakfast time. As
for how well the time is spent, I be
lieve a person would accomplish more
by staying home, reading a book, or
watching TV’s Danny Thomas, the
worst of all the comedians, or just
sittin’ on the front porch in a rocking
chair. Home has just about deteriorated
into a place to bathe and shave and
wait until somebody else in the family
gets back with the car.

The fellow who moans for those
“dollar-a-sack flour days” had better
be careful for what he wishes, because
this means that he also would be work
ing for about 30 cents an hour. If he
were working at all.
e
Mr. Kennedy had hardly found out
where to hang up his pajamas at the
‘White House before Senator Russell
let loose with a blast at the president
about his farm program, which set
some kind of a record for short poli
tical honeymoons. |
. 9 ‘
The Georgia Legislature adjourned
Monday after a 40-day session. I be
lieve it would be better for the state
if the legislature met about every four
years. Then the tax payers wouldn't
have to be “saved” so often. About
two or three more “saves” like we
have endured in the past three or four
yvears, and good-bye Georgia. |

Our town was a panorama of color
and beauty the past week end when
the band festival was held here. The
entire city was something like a car-‘
nival with the boys and girls from
surrounding cities all bedecked in their
colorful uniforms, strolling about the'
streets at intermission times. And
don’t tell me the world is not getting
better. With approximately 1,500 school |
students here, there wasn't a sinele‘
reported incident of misbehavior. The
teachers and parents of these students |
are to be commended, too. Marcus Mul
key, Blakely band director, was in
ccharge of all arrangements, and did a
mighty good job. ;

MANAGERS?”

From our observation, they are. Checking
accounts help them to keep track of their
spending. Current market information aids
them to decide the best time to sell their
crops. New machinery, sometimes financed
through a bank loan, makes the operation of
the farm easier and more productive.
Farmers are always assured of our best serv

MEMBER, THE ORDER
OF THE GOLDEN RULE W55&7w “
A Thought for Today . By: Edsel W. Bryan
“To The Timid and Hesitating, Everything Is
Impossible Because It Seems So. .. .” Scott
Time was when the word impossible carried more
weight than it does in this age—an age devoted to
rapidly shrinking the list of impossibilities which the
world has been compiling for some centuries.
On an individual basis, however, there are many
problems of personal nature which look forbidding
and well night impossible to solve for the simple
reason that they must be met and handled largely
by the individual's efforts. In this instance the cumu
lative power of science, industry and a nation’s re
sources, capable of virtually boosting the word im
possible right out of the dictionary, is of small con
sort to the individual who must reckon with impossi
bility on a small, personal scale where the word still
* has considerable meaning,
