Your Questions About
By MARY GIBBS, Consumer

Q. 1 heard a friend say that peanuts
and peanut butter are a good “snack”
food because they art good sources of
protein as well as calories. 1 thought
protein was found only in meat and
meat products. Do peanuts really con
tain protein?
A. Peanuts are a good source of pro
tein. Protein is obtained from both
animal and plant sources. However.!
there is a difference in completeness
(balance with respect to their essential
amino acid composition) of varicus
proteins. The protein of peanuts is not
as complete as that in milk and eggs.
But when used in a diet with animal
protein such as eggs and milk, peanuts
and peanut products can serve as an
excellent low-cost meat substitute or
protein source. Remember though, that
the packaging of peanut butter influ
ences the price. In a seven-ounce
stemware glass, peanut butter may
cost twice as much as the 24-ounce
can, |
Q. How many cups of peanuts can‘
1 get from one pound of unshelled and
one pound of shell peanuts?
A. The pound of unshelled peanuts
should give you slightly over two cups
(11 ounces). From the pound of shell
ed peanuts you should get slightly
over three cups (15 ounces).
Q. How can 1 compare the actual
cost of the peanuts bought unshelled
with shell peanuts?
A. Here is a simple rule of thumb
to use when buying less than five
pounds of peanuts. First, note the
price for equal weight of both shelled
and unshelled peanuts. Then add 40
percent to the price of the unshelled
peanuts. The two prices will now in
dicate the relative costs.
Q. Do salted peanuts keep as well
as unsalted peanuts?
A. No. Air and salt hasten rancidity
in peanuts. Vacuum-packed peanuts
and unsalted ones keep longer than
those with salt or in cellophane pack
ages. Whole nuts keep longer than
split ones or chopped ones. If you
plan to store peanuts for some time
before using them, buy peanuts in the
shell or in tins. The shell of the pea
nut is its natural protection.

Selective Service Test
Offered College Students
The Annual Selective Service Col
lege Qualifications Test will be offered
to college students April 17 at approxi
mately 500 colleges through the nation.
The score made on the test is a help
to local boards in considering stu
dents for deferment from induction
for study as undergraduate or grad
uate students.,
Col. Mike Hendrix, State Director
of Selective Service for Georgia, an
nounced that the test in Georgia will
be conducted at the following schools:
Albany — Albany State College.
Athens — University of Georgia.
Atlanta — Clark College
Atlanta — Georgia Institute of Tech
nology.
Macon ~— Mercer University.
Mount Berry — Berry College.
Statesboro — Georgia Southern Col
lege.
Col. Hendrix urged students to take
the test.
“The test is for the student’s bene
fit as well as for the Nation's good,”
Col. Hendrix said. “A local board
should have full information about a
student in order to classify him, in
cluding his class standing and a score
on his test. A high test score may com=
pensate for low class standing; and
high class standing may compensate
for a low test score.
“The purpose of student deferments
is to give promising students an oppor
tunity to continue to prepare them
selves for careers in support of the
national interest.
“The undergraduate student who
today does not plan on graduate study
may change his plans as he nears grad
uation,” Col Hendrix added. “That is
the time ‘that a deferment may be
most important. That is also the time
when a test score may be important in
the local board’s decision concerning
deferments.”
Application materials for the test are
now available at the nearest local
board office. Students are urged to
make application early The application
must be postmarked not later than
midnight, April 6. Full instructional
materials are issued with the applica
tion.

FEED GRAIN SURVEY
TO GET UNDER WAY
A survey of all farms in Early
County which produce feed grains is
underway now. The survey is being
conducted throughout the “major feed
grain producing area” (which includes
Early county) as an advance step in
connection with proposed feed grain
programs now under discussion. The
proposals would include adjusting the
1961 acreages of corn and other feed
grains,
To put such a program into opera
tion for 1961 crops in a manner which
would be fair to all growers, accurate
data must be obtained immediately for
the possible establishment of feed
grain base acreages for all farms in
the major fced grain producing area.
Such information will include the
acreage history of corn, grain sorghum,
barley, and cats. as well as the acre
age devoted to other crops and land
uses, for all farms in the area where
one or more of these feed grains were
produced within the past two years.
In other counties — called the
“minor” feed grain producing area,
such data will be obtained for each
feed grain producing farm for which
a request is made by the owner or
operator of the farm.
Each farm operator or owner who
produced feed grains in 1959 should
come by the county office by March 10
and sign a Feed Grain Acreage Report.

Would you add oil to your automo
bile engine if the measuring stick
showed full? Certainly not, but many
Early county farmers are doing the
same thing by using the wrong kind
for fertilizer on their soils.
If your soil is high in phosphate and
low in potash, you certainly would not
use a fertilizer that was also high in
phosphate and low in potash, such as
a 6-12-6. You wouldn’'t use one that
was even in phosphate and potash,
such as a 4-12-12 either. To do so
would be a waste of your fertilizer
money. Yet, many farmers are using
this type fertilizer when they should
be using one that is low in phosphate
and high in potash, such as a 5-10-15,
to meet the needs of the soil.
A summary of soil tests results from
soil samples sent to the soil testing
laboratory from this county shows:
(1) 52% of Early county soils are lower
in potash than in phosphate. (2) 71%
of the fertlizers used should be of a
low phosphate-high potash ratio, such
as a 5-10-15. Yet. last year, only 16%
of the total fertilizer used in Early
county was of this ratio.
~ Be sure you are getting the most
for your fertilizer dollars by using the
right analysis of fertilizer to suit the
soil conditions of your farm. This can
be done by having a soil test made
and following through on the lime
and fertilizer recommendations.

When buying electrical equipment,
a good set of questions to ask yourself
is: Do you actually need the equip

How much space is available to store
the item? says Miss Ooris Oglesby,

SOIL PREPARATION FOR PEANUTS
A smooth, well prepared seedbed in
creases planting efficiency and helps
to secure and maintain a good stand
of peanuts, reports J. Frank McGill,
Extension agronomist. Turn land as
close to planting time as feasible, com
pletely burying all surface litter be
low a depth of three inches, and after
turning, avoid using any tools that
will bring the litter back to the sur
face.
