This 'n That and Odds and Ends:
Guyton McLendon, Fitzgerald high
school band director, and Blakely's
first band director, will bring his band
to Blakely on May 5 for a concert at
the school auditorium. . . . Money isn't
everything, they say, but nobody has
found a replacement for it yet. .. Talk
about depression, yet two of the biggest
problems is to find a place to park
and how to lose weight, and one of the
biggest selling items in America is
hang-over remedies. . . Solving a big
problem is very easy, if the big prob
lem belongs to somebody else . .. Dr.
Sara M. Ivey, a native of this county,
and daughter yof Mrs. G. L. Ivey, of
Bluffton, was, ¥ecently named head of
the Sertoma Speech Correction Clinic
at St. Petersburg, Fla. Dr. Ivey has
established a most excellent record in
her field of work. She received her
A. B. degree at Duke University and
M. A. and Ph. D. degrees at Louisiana
State. She served as professor of speech
and director of the speech clinic at
Wesleyan College, Macon, and direc
tor of the Children’s Clinic at the
University of Michigan Clinic. Be
fore taking her present position, she
was also associate professor of speech
and director of the speech and hearing
clinic at the University of Arkansas
... This department is always happy
to learn of some of cur home boys and
girls excelling in their chosen fields
of endeavor.
Those Smiths and Halls are going to
get together on Sunday, March 26 at
Kolomoki. Tfiis is one of the last of
the big reunions, and is held each year
in memory of Grandma Smith, who
died in recent years at the age of 102.
Several hundred people are usually
present for this happy event ... My
nomination for ithe hardest working
man in town is Glen Enfinger, the
telephone linesman. Glen is on the
go constantly and yet keeps a friendly,
cordial attitude all the time, and never
seems to get upset.

As I sit here grinding out this
column, I do so with a worried mind.
Immediately, after finishing it, I am
supposed to report to my doctor to
have an in-growing toenail removed,
and of it hurts one half as bad as 1
imnagine it will, I won't be able to
stand it. .. When a friend describes
an operation as minor, he is talking
about somebody else’'s operaticn. . .
Robert and. Bob Hall have purchased
Mills Drug Company in Fort Gaines.
Glad to see our citizens branching out,
as this is an indication of a prosper
ing business, but hope it doesn’'t mean
that either of them might forsake our
town to reside in the bluff city, al
though Fort Gaines is a mighty fine
and friendly town. . ..

Listen out for some good news about
the paper mill any day now. Reports
are that contract for the excavation
work is to be let very soon. I un
derstand that the office building alone
for this mill will be the biggest thine
ever built in Early county, to cost
an estimated $400,000.00 .. . The A. J.

ASKS CONSTITUTION
FOR RETRACTION
Editor The News: {
I am quoting below a copy of letter}
which I am writing to Mr. Jim Mont
gomery, Business Editor, Atlanta Con-‘
stitution, regarding an article in yes
terday’'s Constitution about a cement
plant being won by Atlanta:
“I noticed an article on the front
page of yesterday's Atlanta Constitu
tion about a cement plant being won
by Atlanta. You state in this article
it will be a sls-million to 222 million
dollars cement plant. The most ex
pensive new plant to be announced for
Georgia in more than two years.
“You certainly are in error about
this, and you must not know anything
about the $45 million dollar paper mill
which is being built by the Southern
Land, Timber and Pulp Corporation at
Cedar Springs, Ga. in Early county.
The Southern Land, Timber and Pulp
Corporation have offices in ‘Manches
ter, Ga, and in Atlanta, Ga. This mill
will employ 450 people to begin with,
and later on they will have a payroll
of betweet 900 to 1,000 people. The
ground-breaking ceremonies for this
mill were held October 20, 1960, at
the mill site, and Senator Herman Tal
madge made the principal address.
There were between 6000 and 7.000
recple ot the ground breaking cere
monies,
“The people in Early county worked
mighty hard to get this mill, and we
are proud of it. My people in Early
County are upset about your stating
that the cement mill was the most ex
pensive new plant to be announced
for Georgia in two years, and in fair- .
ness to all of them who have worked
so hard for this mill, I want you to re
tract your statement in the paper about
the cement mill being the most ex
pensive new plant to be announced
for Georgia in more than two years,
and put it on the front page of the
paper just like you put the article
about the cement plant.
“Mr. John J. Neely is president of
the Southern Land & Timper Corpora
tion, and his office is located at 795
Peachtree St. N. E, Atlanta, Ga.
“If you will come down to see us in
Early county we will be glad to show
you over th epaper mill site.

MEMBER, THE ORDER
OF THE GOLDEN RULE W “
A Thought for Today . By: Edsel W. Bryan
“Man Doesn’t Live By Bread Alone. . . .
When we speak of “appetite” we automatically
think of food, food for the stomach, that is. But there
is another kind of food, almost equally important to
our well-being. and that is food to nourish the soul
and feed our emotional needs. In order for our bodies
to grow it is essential that we eat, and in order for
our minds to grow it is imperative that we have
something to quench the thirst for spiritual comfort.
Exactly the way people have different preferences
where emotional needs are concerned. A closeness to
God is perhaps the best answer to the need for spiri
tual fulfillment. An appreciation of beauty—espe
cially the beauties of nature—is another feast for our
emotional appetite. There is no set menu. . . the only
important thing is that each person find his own way
“of attaining spiritual fulfillment.
