EARLY COUNTY NEWS, BLAKELY, GEORGIA
For Consecutive
Rainless Days
Tuesday marked the 47th consecu
tive day, (September 15 to October 31
inclusive), without measurable rain
fall being recorded in Biakely. There
was a trace on October 3 and again on
October 29, but no measurable amount
of rain fell. The U, S. Weather Bureau
instruments can record as little as
0.01 inch.
Albany reports a 46-day period of
consecutive rainless days back in 1943
from September 21 to November 7.
Blakely had the same drought, but it
was broken, but not relieved, by 0.06
inches of rain being recorded on Oc
tober 14 at the station on North Main
Street. As of Tuesday, October 31,
there have been 47 consecutive days
recorded in Blakely with no measur
able rainfall. This is the most extend
ed period of rainless days ever record
ed by the present Local Observer,
whose records go back 47 years. How
ever, the records of the Blakely sta
tion date back to 1879 when Den
nis M. Wade, Sr., started keeping the
records.

On October 23, Kathy Rice called to
order the monthly meeting of the Fu
ture Homemakers of America. The de
votional, “A Homemaker’s Prayer,”
was given by Guyla White. The treas
urer, Charlotte Whitehurst, urged the
members to pay their dues so they
would be able to attend District
Meeting, November 4.
Voting on Boy and Girl of the Month
for October followed. It was later an
nounced that Mary Jane Owen and
Nelson Hattaway were the recipients
of this award.
The program, “Builders of Homes”,
was presented by Judy Clark, Ann
Lance, Sue Montgomery, Mona Jones,
Elizabeth Sessions, Guyla White, Ame
lia Goocher, Judy Allen and Judy Cox
as narrator. This program should have
special meaning to those who are plan
ning to have a permanent part of this
program.
Delicious refreshments were served
by Joyce Murkerson. Beverly Gilbert
led the group in a few spirited songs,
after which the meeting was adjourn-l
ed.

Junior Tri-Hi-Y Meeting
The Blakely Junior Tri-Hi-Y met at
Blakely High School on Tuesday, Oc
tober 24, Our President, Judy Collier,
presided over the meeting.
Anne Singletary gave an inspiring
devotional.
We had a report from all our com
mittees and a committee was appoint
ed to make a scrapbook of all our
Y-Club activities.
Under new business we discussed
money-making projects that could be
carried out by our club to make
money for World Service, but we came
to no decision about this.
Our President reminded us about
“Trick or Treat” held on Monday night,
October 30. This was our community
project for the month of October and
all contributions will go to the welfare
department.
Mona Jones, Claire Stein, Elizabeth
Sessions, and Celia Holman gave an
interesting program on how to get the
most out of time spent studying, after
which the meeting was adjourned.

ing staff and also Principal Frank
