SHORT SHORTS: (But not
those you see the girls wear)
The Grist Brothers, Richard and
Dunbar, are presently dismantl
ing their old station on Court
Square, preparatory to building
a modern, new one. I have seen'
the plans, and this new building
will really dress up the East side
of Court Square. . . . Columbia
street is showing some growth,
too. Dr. Whalen .George, the
chiropractor, is building a new
office across the street from
Hewitt Tire Company, and H. A.
Felder has recently bought the
corner at Columbia and Church
and probably something nice
will be placed here one of these
days. Farther out the same street
Early Memorial Hospital is go
ing up at a right rapid rate. . . .
Regret to hear of the death of
my friend Mr. Harry Hubbard,
the singer of pretty songs and
one-time Clay county tax com
missioner, at his home in Fort
Gaines. Mr. Harry will be miss
ed . . . While our attention has
been focused on our winning
football, some fine performances
by the Blakely high school band
has gone unnoticed. It is coming
up with some snappy routines
each week end. And our band
majoriette and cheer leaders
are the prettiest of them all.

As a rule 1 do not care much
for these little essays, which are
patterned after well known Bi
ble passages, but -‘B-Rock” Sto
vall sends me one which fits the
occasion pretty well. Here it is:
“The government is my shep
herd, I need not work. It allows
me to lie down on good jobs, it
leadeth my by still factories, it
destroyeth my initiative; it lead
eth me in the path of a parasite
for political sake. Yea, though I
walk through the valley of lazi
ness and deficit spending, I will
fear no cvil, for the government
is with rme. It’s doles and voter
getters, they comfort me. It pre
pareth an economic Utopia for
me by appropriating the earn
ings of my grandchildren. Sure
ly, the government” shall care
for me all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in a fool’s para
dise forever.”
Girls if you want a college
education and a chance to look
for a husband, too, go to Au
burn. That is, if you think you
could put up with all that War
Eagling the rest of your days.
There are two boys to every girl
at the “Loveliest Village of the
Plains” . . Words can have sev
eral meanings, so be careful
how vou use them, as can be at
tested by this little item which
turned up on my desk: “Call her
a hen and she’s mad; call her a
chick and she loves it. Call him
flat-headed and he wants to slug
you; call him level-headed and
he’s flattered. Call her a sight
and she’ll get into a huff; call
her a vision and she blooms. Call
her a kitten and she purrs. Call
her a cat and get out of her way.

The old 9th senatorial district
of Early, Calhoun and Baker
counties is no more. The re-ap
portionment law created a new
district, known as the 11th and
is made up of the counties of
Baker, Calhoun, Clay, Decatur,
Early, Miller and Seminole It
appears now that Julian Webb,
Donalsonville attorney and a
fine gentleman, will be our sena
tor. All that running W. L.
Stone did to get nominated as
9th district senator was just for
the sake of running. . . The large
cities now have control over the
state of Georgia, and that is the
way it will forever be. . . When
history is written 1962 ought to
go in the books as ‘“election
year”, Two will be held in our
county next week, one on Octo
ber 16 to name a 11th district
senator, and another on the fol
lowing day to name a clerk of
the courts, to succeed the late
Bert Tarver. And the general
election still is to be held in
November..
From what I saw of the Blake
ly “B” team the past week, the
Bobcats may be championship
contenders for several years to
come. The Little Guys knocked
off the Miller County “B's” the
past Thursday night 7-0, and
looked pretty good in doing it.
Coaching is the thing. The little
team looked better than some of
the varsities I have seen. . . I
like the way backfield coach
Wayne Proffitt congratulates
his players when they do well .
Meet me out at Standifer Field
Fridany night where our Bobcats
will do battle with those Pelham
Hornets. Our 'Cats are well on
the way to another region cham
pionship but can’t let up or some
of these “weak” teams may
knock them off.
Two little boys rushed home wet
and gasping, “Mama, Jimmy fell into
the lake.”
“Gracious! " said the mother. ‘Did
you give him artificial respiration?”
“We tried to, Mama,” one child
panted, “but he kept getting up and
running off.”

S. S. Questions
Answered By Manager
Q. Last week one of your field men
came to my house and said my hus
band and I could get cur checks rais
ed if we paid him S4O. I told him I
would have to wait and talk to my
husband when he came home. We
think we want to pay for the raise
but want to be sure about how much
raise we will get,
+A. This man was not from the So
cial Security Office. None of us can
accept money for any purpose. If this
man comes back, call the police. Any
time anyone comes to your home to
talk about social security ask him to
show you his identification. If he
works in this office, he will be glad
to identify himself. At any rate, don't
ever give money to anyone who says
he works for Social Security no mat
ter what he promises.
Q. My husband and his brother
have been running a cattle farm as
partners for several years. My hus
band died last month. Do I pay social
security on his share of the partner
ship income for this year?
A. Yes. When a member of a part
nership dies his share of the earnings
for the year of his death is included
To keep you car-safe and carefree. To keep your mind on the road, not on your car.
That's the purpose of Standard’s famous Fall Certified Car-Check.

It's a system so complete that when we're through, we give your car a “diploma.”

for social security purposes.
Q. I started drawing social® security
in 1958 when I was 65, I have been
working part time for S2O per week
which didn't knock me out of any
social security. My wife has been sick
a lot and we moved with our son.
I get $62.50 a month rent on our house.
Will this make me lose my social se
curity?
A. No. Only earning count. Rent, in
terest, dividends and other investment
income will not cause you to lose your
social security benefit.
Q. My husband was killed in an
automobile accident last week leaving
me and the baby. He was just over
20 and had never done much but go
to school, He did work five or six
summers in a grocery store and I
wonder if I could draw anything for
myself and the baby?
A. A person as young as your hus
band would need only 6 quarters of
coverage. You should come by and file
a claim as he may have earned six
quarters during vacations.
District Attorney: “Now tell the
court why you stole the car.”
“Prisoner: “Well, your Honor, It
was standing in front of the cemetery
so naturally I though the owner was
dead.”

Ban Cigarettes,
Air Force Cries
In New Ruling
Washington, D. C. — The Air Force
has placed a ban on gifts of cigarettes
to men in the service's base hospitals,
a spokesman said recently.
An order was issued September 17,
banning gifts of cigarettes because of
what the Air Force called “ever in
creasing evidence” linking cigarette
smoking with lung cancer and other
diseases. The order said such evidence
“can no longer be ignored.”
The Air Force spokesman said to
bacco companies had been informed
of the order
Many scientists have declared that
research indicates that cigarette smok
ing can cause lung cancer, especially
if many cigarettes are consumed over
a long period. Howaver, manufacturers
of cigarettes dispute this, contending
that research so far is inconclusive and
fails to give proper weight to other
possible causes such as fumes from
automobile engines.
CBS News said it learned the order
was issued under the signature of Maj.
Gen. R. L. Bohannon, deputy surgeon
general of the Air Force, on behalf of
the surgeon general.

Q. While large families spend more
for food, is the cost on a per person
basis more or less for small families?
A. Statistics from the U, S. De
partment of Agriculture's Agricultural
Research Service show that a family
of four using the USDA moderate cost
food plan spends about $32 a week for
groceries, If there are five in the fam
ily, however, food costs will run five
percent less per person. With six or
more people to feed. you pay about
10 percent less for each than for a
family of four. For small families of
two or three, the reverse is true. It
costs about five percent more to feed
each person in a family of three and
10 percent more for each in a family
of two. And if a man or woman lives
alone, food costs 20 percent more per
person than for a family of four.
Q. Last week I read that fresh
Bartlett pears were in good supply.
What things indicate high quality in
this fruit?
A. Look for fresh DBartlett pears
that are firm but not hard. A ripe pear
is yellow rather than green and often
has a faint blush of pink. Slightly
under-rip pears will, however. turn
golden when held a few days at room
temperature.
Q. What is the cutlook for the .pe
can crop this year?
A. According to the Stastical Re
porting Service of USDA. the 1962
pecan crop will be smaller. It is pre
dicted that this year's crop will pro
duce only one package of pecans for
each three that you saw on your gro
cer's shelf in 1961.
Some Veterans Became
Eligible For Dental Care
Peacetime veterans with non-com
pensable service-connected disabilities
who have just become eligible for
Veterans Administration medical and
dental treatment, under a new law,
must secure approval from the Geor
gia VA Regional Office before they
go to private physicians and dentists
for treatment at VA expense.
If this prior approval is not obtain

The law, signed by the President
August 14, makes peacetime veterans.

compensable disability (less than 10
percent), eligible for VA outpatient
medical and dental treatment and for
VA hospitalization.
Those with service-connected den
tal conditions must apply for treat
ment within one year from discharge.
They receive one-time dental treat
ment.
Those needing hospitalization for
