Donalsonville To Hold 4
Sport Car Races
October 20 And 21
Donalsonville, Ga, — Dozens of en
tries have alraedy been received for
the sports car races to be held on the
Donalsonville airport on Saturday
and Sunday, October 20 and 21, and
about 65 to 70 drivers are expected to
participate in the fast-moving event.
Jack Brannon, show chairman, says™
the races will be in eight separate
categories, based on the engine con
| struction of each car, Cars cost sev
| eral thousands of dollars and the races
| will include examples of workmanship
‘[of several foreign countries.
1 Brannon leads the Lions Club com
| mittee planning the show, It will be
' directed and supervised by the Sports
Car Club of America. Taking part
will be SCCA members of the Dixie,
. Sowega and Central Alabama regions.
| The races will be run on a 1.95-mile
course on the airport. There will be
nine turns on the course and cars will
often reach speeds of more than a
hundred miles an hour. Drivers will
| compete for trophies.
Brannon says his committee is pre
paring for five to six thousand spec
tators during the two-day event.
There will be ample parking space,
seating capacity. restroom facilities,
and food will be available.
Profits from the project will be used
by the club to finance its community
service projects, including the school
band program, the little league base
ball program, treatment and preven
tion work through sight conservation,
and many others.
An added attraction of the Sunday
program will be a performance by a
group of parachutists from Ft. Ben
ning. Members of the Ft. Benning
Sports Parachute Club will make nine
jumps, competing to see which jumper
can come closer to a target on the
runway of the airport.
The first race is scheduled for 2:45
p. m,, Saturday. The complete schedule
of events:
Saturday, October 20, 9:00 a. m.,
registration and safety inspection at
the course; 10 a. m., practice begins;
12:30, lunch; 1:15 p. m,, mandatory
drivers meeting; 2:00 p. m., novice
race, ten laps. Races 1, 2 and 3 will
begin at 2:45, 3:30 and 4:15. The course
closes at 5:00.
Sunday, October 21, 10:30 a. m.,
practice begins; 12 noon, parachute
show; races 4,5, 6, 7 and 8 begin at
1:00, 1:45, 2.30, 3-15 and 4:15.
Saturday races are all of ten laps
each, and the Sunday races will grow
from fifteen laps for the first three,
| to twenty for the seventh, and twenty
five for the eighth.
