Atlanta, (GPS) — For two conse
cutive months Georgia's traffic death
toll has shown a downward trend, but
total fatalities for the pear are still no
ticeably ahead of 1961,

tistics compiled by the Georgia De
partment of Public Safety’s Accident
Reporting Division, just released by

The report shows that durng the
irst nine months 747 persor s lost their
lives in Georgia tra'fic accidents, com
sared with 693 in the same period last
‘€ar, an increase of 54, or eight pe
cent.

Talmadge Goes
On Diplomatic

Atlanta, (GPS) — As the curtain
vas slowly descending on the long
est session of Congress in 11 years,
U. S. Senator Herman E. Talmadge
‘eft Washington on a three-week di
plomatic mission to Central and South
America which will culminate in his
attendance as an official delegate of
the Senate at the 51st Conference of
the Interparliamentary Union to be
held at Brasilia, Brazil, October 23
through November 1,
Talmadge is one of a delegation of
six senators and six congressmen ap
pointed to represent the U. S. Con
gress at the sessions of the Interpar
liamentary Union. The former Georgia
Governor has accepted the invitation
of the IPU to address the body on
the subject “Protection of Public
Funds.”
The delegation also wil] represent
the Department of State in assessing
the Alliance for Progress Program and
in conversations on the promotion of
better relations between the U. S.
and Latin American countries and the
formulation of a common policy in
the fight against Communism in Cuba
and in Central and South America.
The schedule calls for the delega
tion to go first to Mexico City, then
to Lime, Buenos Aires, Rio de Jenairo
and Brasilia. The group is traveling
by Air Force Jet. Mrs. Talmadge is
accompanying the Georgia senator,

the Interparliamentary Union is the
oldest international organization dedi
cated to world peace. Its primary pur
pose is to bring together and provide
a forum for members of the parlia
ments of the Free World to discuss the
promotion of international under
standing and world trade.

ments are the North Atlantic Treaty
Organization and the European Econo
mic Community which resulted dir
ectly from conversations among its
'European members.
The IPU meeting in Brasilia, the
ultra-modern new capital of Brazil
located in the interior of that country
some 600 miles from Rio de Janerio,
takes on particular significance in
’the light of the growing concern over
‘the penetration of Latin America and
‘the Western Hemisphere by Interna
‘tional Communism. .

Georgia Pilot Club
Wins Carol Lane Awar
Mrs. Jewel McLendon, president of
the Pilot Club of Blakely made the
important announcement that a Pilot
Club had won the first place Carol
Lane Award of the National Safety
Council. A SI,OOO U. S. Savings Bond
and a bronze Sculpture symbolizing
woman's protective instirce will be
presented to the Pilot Club of Dalton,
Georgia at the Women's National
Safety Conference to be held in Chica
go October 29—November 1.
Three other Pilot Clubs will receive
a Certificate of Merit—the Pilot Clubs
in Jackson, Mississippi, Port Lavaca,
Texas and Hartford, Connecticut.
Mrs. Barbara M. Machett, of Victoria,
Texas, President of Pilot Interational,
will participate in the Women's Na~
tional Safety Conference—the golden
anniversary year of the National Safe
ty Council.
The first place award for the Pilot
Club of Dalton will be accepted by
Mrs. Jessie Lee Collier, Safety Chair
man for her club, and for all Pilot
Clubs in Georgia, District 1 of Pilot
International.
Pilot Clubs throughout Pilot Inter=-
national are active in safety work,
and Pilot's first Traffic Safety Con
ference sponsored by the Allstate
Foundation was held recently at Michi
gan State University in East Lansing.
