Many Peacetime Vets
Now Eligible For
Vocational Training
Atlanta, Ga. — Many Peacetime
veterans who sustained service-con
nected disabilities while in the mili
tary are now eligible for vocational
rehabilitation training under a new
law, Georgia Veterans Service Direc
tor Pete Wheeler reports.
The new law, signed by the Presi
dent recently, applies to veterans who
inculred service-connected disabilities
in the period between World War II
and the Korean War and after Febru
ary 1, 1955,
Prior to passage of this new law,
only wartime veterans with service
connected disabilities were eligible for
vocational rehabilitation training
benefits.
The benefits, which amount to as
much as four years vocational reha
bilitaiion training at government ex
pense, primarily affect peacetime vet
erans with as much as a 30-percent
disability. Those with less than 30-
percent disabilities must have a “pro
nounced employment handicap” to
qualify.
There is no time limit for final da. e
set in the law to ob.ain the benefits.
I has been estimated that nearly 100,-
000 peacetime veterans may be eligi
ble for the new benefiis at present,
and som 12,000 men sustain such dis
abilities in the military each year.
Any Georgia veteran desiring fur
ther information on this program or
advice and assistance on any veterans
benefits should contact the nearest
office of (he Georgia Department of
Veterans Service.
The nearest Veterans Service Of ice
is located at Blakely. The name of the
Office Manager is Tom Morgan.
