USDA Livestock
Survey To Start
On November 19
How many beef cattle, milk cows,
sheep and chickens are on Georgia
farms? How much milk do these
cows give and how many eggs do the
hens lay?
The mammoth task of answering
these and other questions about live
stock on Georgia farms is now facing
the Georgia Crop Reporting Service.
To begin seeking the answers, the
service will send some 10000 ques
{ionaires to livestock and poultry pro
ducers. These cards will be delivered
next week (week of November 19) as
the first step of the annual production
survey conducted by the U. S. De
partment of Agriculture.
~ The survey is made each year to
determine the number of animals on
hand, as well as the egg, milk and
wool production. according to Archie
Langley, agriculiural statistician for
the state,
The livestock survey, Mr. Langley
|said, provides the basic information
| for livestock, poultry and wool re
*p()rts used by producers and market
ling men in planning their year's ac
tivities. A large response to the sur
|vey by producers helps insure more
‘:ro‘inbl(\ estimates for the coming year.
Rural mail carriers distribute the
Iquvstiunnniro cards for the Depart
|ment of Agriculture to selected farms
|along their routes and pick up com
h)leted cards. Local postmasters take
|care of getting the cards to the state
lstatistician and the Statistical Report
ing Service in Washington, which con
‘ducts thesurvey.
| The Georgia Crop Reporting Serv
{ice regards this as one of the most
important surveys it makes each year,
iMr. Langley said. More than 50 per
fcent of Georgia cash receipts from
farm marketings come from livestock.
I Mr. Langley urges farmers who re
|ceive survey cards to fill in request
’od information carefully and to re
turn the cards to their mail carriers
promptly so the resulting estimates
will be as accurae as possible.
Copies of the livestock and poultry
reports are available free from the
office of the agricultural statisticianm.
Requests should be sent to the Georgia
Crop Reporting Service, 315 Hoke
Smith Annex, Athens, Georgia,
