Blakely's fighting Bobeats
have another river to cross this
Thursday night on the road to
the final goal—the championship
of football for “B” schools. Many
times in the past few years, our
Bobcats have been permitted to
climb the mountain and look
over into the promised land, but
each time fate has denied them
permission to enter. Once in
Thomaston, when the team was
under Frank Buckner, it missed
by ‘a: penalty of being the statel
champs. Last year in Fort Val
ley, the Bobcats lost a heart
breaker. Will they make it this
time? Thursday night is the sec
ond hurdle. They must take
Hawkinsville if they continue
the journey to their goal. Qur
‘Cats will need all the support
they can get. I hope fans will
take advantage of Thursday be
ing a holiday and will go to
Hawkinsville in great numbers
and give our boys a roaring ova
tion when they come on the
field. But I'll say right here and
now: Win, lose or draw, if you
are a football fan and like ~ to
see a team do its best, then
you've got to take you hat off
when the Bobcats come march
ing, and no matter how the game
comes out, you’ll just have to
give them credit for doing in
every game the very best they
know how. That'’s the way
Coach Ray Knight teaches it,
:fd that is the way his boys play
» % 8
. While most of us are up in
the air about football, may I re
mind you that the basketball
season opened, and the Bobcats
are off to a good start. These
boys and girls are going to need
some support, too.

There is no need to trek to the
mountains to see the fall foliage.
It is abundant right here as
home. I <o not believe I ever
remember seeing the woods
preity as they are this year.
* B &
Our town is considerably
brightened up this week by the
boys and girls who will be home
from college to enjoy the
Thanksgiving holidays and to
stock up on mother’s home cook
ing,
sk & *
No wonder the world is all
messed up when a tune like
“Son, Don’t go near the Eski
mos” can get on the hit parade
of songs.

“First the blade, then the ear,
after that the full corn in
the ear.” Mark IV, 28
“
... After That
. ”
The Full Corn in the Ear,
In the past 15 yvears, we have seen 2,412
young men harvest their corn. And some
are winners in the 4-H Hybrid Corn Program.
This harvest is only the beginning. The
good these young farmers do multiplies like
seed returned to earth. They influence state
agriculture. Hybrid planting has jumped
from 20 to over 93 per cent. Their output is
triple the state’s average per-acre yield. This
is an important accomplishment since more
acres are devoted to corn (and it has greater
dollar value) than any other crop in Georgia.
We feel privileged to join the Cooperative
Extension Service each year in sponsoring
this 4-H program. It is good to see crops
flourish. It is better to see our young people
grow toward useful maturity.

lYour Questions About —
~ BUYING
By DR. MARY GIBBS
Consumer Marketing Specialist
Q. How long may Bartlett pears be
stored? If I bought several bushels
at the Farmers’ Market, coul I keep
some of them uniil Christmas?
A. The length of time it is safe
to store fall and winter pears depends
on the variety, when the fruit is pick
ed and whether it is shipped before
or after storage. Bartlett pears are
not a good variety for storage. Kieffer
pers, however, can be kept for two
to three months if they are sound,
firm and still green when stored and
are kept at {he recommended tem
perature of 60 to 65 degrees F. Paper
wrappers may be used to prevent di
| rect contact between sound fruit and
‘ruit developing blue mold or gray
mold rot.
Q. What are Secke] pears?
A. Seckel pears is a small, firm
tleshed variety marketed from Sep
tember to Decembr . The brownish
green skin of the Seckel pear be
comes dull yellow-brown with reddish
blush when ripe. The white, buttery
flesh and spicy flavor make the Seckel
a favorite for eating fresh. This va
riety may also be canned or pickled,
Q. Was there an increase in food
donations to ncedy person overseas
in 1961?
A. Yes. According to officials of the
U. S. Department of Agriculture, food
donations increased 15 percent last
year. This food, part of the Food for
Peace program, totaled more than 2.7
billion pounds with a value of $224 500
000. The food was acquired by USDA
in its price-support and surplus re
moval operations and distributed by
U. S. voluntary relief agencies in over
100 friendly countries, It consisted of
‘lour, nonfat dry milk, shortening,
corn meal and cottonseed oil,

PROTECT FROZEN FOODS
WHILE DEFROSTING
Guard frozen foods while defrosting
the refrigerator with an insulated |
picnic bag or- basket, suggests Miss
Lora Laine, Extension home manage
ment specialist. Pack food cartons
close together with trays of ice cubes
at top and bottom. Fill space and seal
in the cold with layers of newspapers.
Foods will stay safely frozen as long
as it takes to defrost and clean the
refrigerator.
