Farm Machinery
_ Storage Stops
!
Trouble Later
Start off next planting season with
trouble-free equipment that will last
through the season without costly re-l
pairs by storing farm machinery prop
erly this winter. \
As soon as you are through using
machinery is the time to get it ready
for storage, says Extension Engineer
H. B. Goolsby of the University of
Georgia College of Agriculture.
He suggests the following winter
izing procedure for all machinery that
is not to be used for several months:
1. Clean all machinery thoroughly.
2, Inspret garefully for worn or
broken parts.
3. Make repairs during off-season.
Some parts may have to be ordered,
and the delay in time would be costly
when the machinery is needed. |
4. Protect machinery under cover of
buildings or waterproof tarpaulins.
All belts and canvasses should be
removed, placed in a burlap bag and
‘the bag hung from the ceiling in a dry
building. Remove all chains, soak in
oil for several days and store in a
cool, dry place.
Lubricate machinery thoroughly be
fore putting into storage and paint
wherever needed. Cover soil-wearing
surfaces and other surfaces that will
rust with a rust prventive.
Engines require special attention to
keep them in ifirst-class condition
during storage. He outlined the fol
lowing procedure for preparing trac
tor and stationary engines to be stor
ed for as long as two months:
Clean the engine thoroughly with
a good detergent, a stiff brush and
rags.
Run the engine until it is thorough
ly warmed up and drain oil from
crankcase completely. If equipped
with an oil filier, remove the old
element, clean the filter body and in
stall a new element. Refill the crank
_case with a good grade of oil and run
the engine for a few minutes to dis
tribute oil to all parts of the engine.
. Clean the cooling sysiem. Drain
the coolant while hot by removing the
rediator drain plug and opening the
“engine block drain valve. Be sure to
drain out all of the coolant. Then add

Raise and block both front and rear

Remove the battery and store in a

slowly discharge.
_ Finally, plug the exhaust pipe with
waterproof tape. . e
These practices also apply to diesel
engines, but several additional steps
should be taken with diesels.
The diesel fuel tank should be drain

Winter Weather
Increases Poultry
House Fire Danger
Fires, many of them due to faulty
electrical systems, destroy many poul
try houses in Georgia every winter,
These fires are usually due to the
extra load put on the elctrical sys
tem combined with conditions in poul
try houses that increase the danger,
according to Jerry Cox, Extension
poultryman for the University of
Georgia Colleg of Agriculture.
A little time spent in checking and
getting the electrical system in shape
for cold weather can help prevent
costly fires, he said. He suggested the
following points to check and correct
if needed: |
In poorly ventilated poultry houses
during the winter months moisture
accumulates. If insulation is broken
or weak, this moisture can cause fail
ure. Check condition of the wire at
last once a year, preferably in the
fall, and replace any with broken in
sulation. These wires can also be ex
tremely dangerous to those working
in the house, '
Dust is another condition tht creates
dangerous situations. Dust can accu
mulate inside motors of automatic
feeders and other electrical equipment+
If these motors are not cleaned regu
larly, the dust can cause motors to
burn out and possibly start a fire.
One method of removing dust from
motors is with a vacuum cleaner.
When purchasing a new motor consid
er one that is dust procf, he suggests.
Dust from poultry houses settles,
among other places, on light bulbs.
This is another danger spot in addi
tion to greatly reducing the efficiency
of th lighting system. Clean light
bulbs at least every two weeks.
Improper fusing is another cause of
fires. Be sure the right size fuses are
used and that the wiring system is
adequate for peak loads it will carry.
flushing oil poured in. If flushing oil
is not available, a mixture of one-half
A. A. E. 10-W engine crankcase oil
and one-half pure white kerosene
may be used.
Start and run engine until a blue
white smoke appears at the exhaust.
This will indicate the regular fuel in
the filters has been used wup and
flushing oil is being used. Operate the
ngine for approximately 10 minutes
on the flushing oil. Leave the flushing
oil in until the engine is removed
from storage.
