Demands For Airport |
Outlined By Official
The Early County Board of Commis
sioners . recently engaged Davis &
Floyd, Consultant Ongineers, to sur
vey the present airport and other
suggested sites and make estimates of
the cost of improving the airport fa
cilities in Early County.
A committee was named composed
of Edsel Bryan, “Tige" Pickle, Nick
Collins and Walter Hodges. The
‘Blakely Jaycees are backing the pro-
Ject with Nick Collins, president and
Walter Hodges, Chairman of Com
munity Development Project Commit
tee working with the Early County
officials and with the Georgia Depart
‘ment of Commerce, Aviation Division.
~ John H. Bennett, Manager of the
lAviation\Division. Georgia Dept. of
Commerce, outlined to the Jaycees
he tremendous growth of the busi
-less of flying. He stated: “Whenever
an industry is considering a locality
one of the first quesiions asked is.
What are the Airport Facilities in the
Area’?”
At the present time the Federal
Aviation is working on the 1964 alloca
tions in the Federal Aid to Airporis
Program. Blakely and Early county
would have to contact the Georgia
Department of Commerce immediately
and do everything possible to be able
to be included in the 1964 program.”
“If Early county is to continue to
match the growth of the state it must
include an adequate airport,” Blakely
Jaycees have said.
A longer run-way has been built at
th Great Southern Paper Mill, but
this strip is unpaved and is not light-

Commissioners Meet
The board of county commissioners
held its regular monthly meeting
Tuesday morning, completing the
usual routine business, the payment
of bills, and adjourning at noon. All
‘members were present, namely: Se
‘vola Jones, chairman; V, L. McLen
don, C. S. Chandler, Donald McAr
thur, and the clerk, Mrs. Bert Tar
\ver.
The commission approved a resolu-
Ition. agreeing to participate with the
state and federal governments in
making improvements to the local
forestry unit. Mrs. Marie Williams,
director of the local welfare depart
ment, came before the board and told
ithat Early couniy was short nearly a
hundred pints of blood at the Tal
| madge Memorial Hospital. Patients
| from Early have been drawing from
the blood bank without replacing it.
'This blood must be replaced, Mrs.
Williams stated, and she asked the
icommissioners to aid in a program for
its replacement. She said a bloodmo-
Ibile from Augusta would be in Early
|county soon for this purpose.
ed. The day is coming, or it may al
ready be here, when a good airport is
as important as a good highway.
Recently a coach from the Univer
sity of Georgia came to Blakely by
plane and had to return to Albany to
land and have someone go up to Al
bany by car to bring him to Blakely.
At the Camden County-Blakely foot
ball game there were three chartered
or privately owned plans. These
planes left after the game on an un
lightd, unpaved airstrip. The demand
for a modern airport is increasing.
