FIRE ANTS
Although there have been a
number of persons hospitalized
in Georgia because of imported
fire ant stings to date there have
been no known deaths attributed
directly to fire ants.
There are several recorded
cases of livestock deaths on
farms heavily infested with the
ants,
The Georgia Department of
Agriculture, which is working on
a program whereby local farm.
ers may purchase a new fire ant
bait at cost to treat their local‘
infestations, says it is just asi
concerned about the fire ant as
a public health threat as it is anl
agricultural problem,
A spokesman for the Depart
ment pointed out this week that
there are so many ants in a fire
mound and they attack so quick
ly they are particularly danger
ous to small children. Several
near deaths were reported in the
Atlanta area this past fall. he
added
The local County Agent and
county Farm Bureau office are
cooperating with the Department
of Agriculture in an attempt to
help farmers deal with this pest
until the State-Federal eradica
tion program reaches this area.

Until it does it will be necessary
’for landowners to combat the
pest thefselves,
The Department is -recom
mending a new fire ant bait
which does an excellent job of
controlling the ant with com
plete safety to wildlife and do
mestic animals, Retail price of
the material is rather high but
farmers who sign up now will
be able to purchase a supply of
the material at 12¢ per pound.
Farmers and other landowners
are urged to survey their prop
erty carefully and determine
whether or not they have fire
ants, If they do they should con
tact the county agent or Farm
Bureau office for information on
how to obtain this material,
Good Land Preparation
Key To Peanut Production
The peanut farmers who ex
pect to make good yields must
take advantage of every method,
factor and resource possible, It
demands systematic planning,
careful execution and constant
re-appraisal. No single practice
can satisfy the many require
ments of this crop but each must
be applied in logical sequence,
one building upon the other.
SOIL -~ Land preparation is
important in peanut production,
since it influences weed control,
disease control, cultural practices
and harvesting. Through the best}
job of land preparation known
will not solve all problems of
peanut production, it is very im
portant and possibly as far
reaching as any single practice
known.
GRASS SEED — Good land
preparation reduces next spring's
weed population by burying
many seed below germination
depth, This is done by deep
breaking with a plow equipped
with a trash covering device. The
weed seed must be buried three
inches or deeper during land
prepartion and allowed to re
main there throughout the grow
ing season,
~ WHITE MOLD — Good land
preparation reduces the inciden
ce of Southern Blight commonly
know as “white mold”. Organ
isms causing white mold thrive
on decaying organic matter on
or near the soil surface. Deep
burial of weeds and trash dis
courage spread of blight, Much
of this litter decomposes entire
ly before the peanut roots en
counter, Though roots -do en
counter, deeply buried litter,
there is less oxygen available
there to aid in spreading the di
sedfse organism. Litter on the
soil surface is likely to affect

This is why trash covering de.
vice is recommended for every
bottom plow used in preparing
land for peanuts,
DEPTH — Where cultivation
is used to supplement chemical
‘weed control. care must be tak
‘en to plow shallow. This allows
organic matter and weed seed to
remain below the surface where
they can do the least possible
peanut damage, If cultivation is
necessary, use a flat sweep that
cuts cleanly without shifting
soil die and become a host to
disease organisms.
EFFICIENCY — Good land
preparation, by reducing potent
ial weed and grass population,
assures the grower of producing
a cleaner crop with less effort,
A clean windrow at harvest time
increases the overall efficiency
of harvesting machinery, A
healthy peanut plant is more ef
ficiently handled by such ma
chinery due to its uniformity.
Other important advantages of
proper land preparation may be
cited, These include conservation
of the soil by incorporating or
ganic matter rather than re
moving it from the land. Good
land preparation increases or
| maintains water holding capacity
by leaving the soil generally
Yodse. Avoid harrowing which
tend to compact the soil.
) TIMING — The grower to
watch is the fellow who began
land preparation last fall by
mowing stalks, harrowing and
“preparing to prepare”. He may
safely postpone final land turn
ing for several weeks, He can
afford to wait a few weeks later,
because he knows he can do good
land preparation quickly and
use it effectively as a founda
tion upon which to build a pro
duction sequence,
