All Rural Families
Can Now Have New
Or Improved Housing
The Georgia Farmers Home
Administration State Director,
8. L. VanLandingham, said today
new or improved housing is well
within the price range of most
rural families with small in
comes, because of new federal
government financing arrange
ments and the development of
low-cost housing.
“In some areas in South Geor
gia,” Mr. VanLandingham con
tinued, “we are helping fami
lies build housing on which their
monthly payments, in some cas
es, will be just $35.00.
“Other families are making
plans to have their homes reno
vated inside and out.
“Our loans for home improve
ment,” VanLandingham added,
“enable a family to put new sid
ing on their homes and fix up
the interiors as well as the out
side. These funds can also finance
the installation of a bathroom
or an extra bedroom.”
The expanded use of the Far
mers Home Administration funds
is made possible through the
agency's new insured housing
loan program in which the re.
payment of money advanced by
private lenders for construction
is guaranteed by the federal gov
ernment,
Under the new insured pro
gram, housing loans can be made
to families of low-income at §
percent interest and up to 33 years
for repayment,
Farmers Home Administration
credit is advanced only when the
appilcant’s needs cannot be met
by other lenders.
VanLandingham said that fam
ilies with weekly take home pay
as small as $45 may be able to
obtain loans to improve their
housing through construction of
new homes, purchase of pre
viously occupied housing or re
pair or expansion of present
dwelling.
Local offices of the Farmers
Home Administration have a sup
ply of basic house plans for the
construction of low-cost housing
for limited income families,
These plans are free for the ask
ing.
Applications for loans are
made at the local office in the
Warrick Building, in Blakely, Ga.

Kimberly-Clark Expands
Its Coosa River Plant
Coosa Pines, Ala. — Installa
tion of a large new paper ma
chine that will make the local
facility, by mid-1967, the nation’s
largest newsprint mill, has start
ed at the Coosa River Newsprint
Division of Kimbenly-Clark Cor
poration here.
The expansion will cost more
than ssl million, the company
said. Included in the cost is a
$2.5-million water pollution con
trol system that already has
been put into operation.
The new machine, with an an
nual capacity of 150,000 tons,
will be the fourth to be install
ed at this 16-year-old plant. It
will increase capacity of the di
vision by 62 percent, to 440,000
tons a year.
Structural steel for a building
to house the machine is being
erected, and work on related
improvements including new
warehouse space, bark burning
equipment and pulp producing
facilities is under way,
Richard J. Appert, vice presi
dent of Kimberly-Clark, and
general manager of its newsprint
division, said the new capacity
will enable his company to pro
vide for the constantly growing
requirements of current and
prospective newspaper customers
in the plant's market area.
The mill now serves more than
200 newspapers in 22 Southern,
Southwestern and Midwestern
states from Texas to Maryland.
It began production in 1950
with two 226-inch paper machines
that were capable of producing
a total of 125,000 tons of news
print a year. In 1958 a $35-million
expansion introduced a third ma
chine, with a width of 343 inch
es, that doubled the plant’s ca
pacity. Later, technological im:
provements raised the plant's
capacity to 270,000 tons.
The new No. 4 machine also
is 343 inches wide and designed
to run at spesds up to 3,000 feet
a minute, It includes a large
number of technical innovations
which will significantly improve
the quality and finish of the pa
per sheet, the company said.
The mill now uses some 420,000
cords of wood a year, most of it
loblolly and longleaf pine. Al
though Kimberly-Clark owns
more than 350,000 acres of forest
lands in a 17-county area sur
rounding this mill, only 15 per
cent of the wood comes from its
own forests. The rest is purchas
ed from local farmers. The com
pany figures that when the new
machine is put into operation its
wood requirements will exceed
650,000 cords a ycar,
The Coosa River Newsprint
Company was organized by mem
bers of the Southern Newspaper
Publishers Association and a
group of Alabama businessman.
They selected Kimberley-Clark,
which has been making newsprint
since 1872, to build and manage
the mill. In 1962 the plant be
came a wholly owned division
of Kimberly-Clark,
