Library Week
GREAT NORTHERN PAPER
REALIGNS ORGANIZATION
At a meeting of the Board
of Directors, recently held in
New York City, Great Northern
Paper Company elected three
new vice presidents.
Effective immediately, Bruce
P. Ellen will be vice president
of the Southern Division and Ro
bert J. Shinners will be vice
president of the Northern Di
vision. The election of Emery
E. Allain as vice president. Fi
nance will be effective June 1,
1968. Mr. Allain succeds Ho
ward G. Brush who will retire
under the Company’s retirement
plan in August, 1968.
According to Peter SI Paine,
Great Northern Chairman and
Chief Executive Officer, the e
lection of Messrs. Shinners and
Ellen as vice presidents in charge
of the Company’s Northern and
Southern Divisions, is in line
with the Company’s objective of
developing divisional responsi
bility.
Mr. Paine also announced the
resignation of J. H. Heuer, vice
president- Operations, and a Di
rector since 1962. Mr. Heuer
is leaving to accept a position
with another paper company.
Mr. Allain was educated at
Bentley College and Northeas
tern University and began his
business career in 1944 with

has been announced by Super

Graduation exercises will be
held at Mangham Auditorium on
Monday, June 3, at 8 p.m. Bac
calaureate Services will be on
Sunday evening, June 2, at Mang
ham Auditorium, at 8 p.m.
Honor’s Day will be May 24,
at 10:45 a.m. Friday morning
and Friday evening, May 24 at
8 p.m., the Jack and Jill Kinder
garten will hold Graduation Ex
ercises.
The FFA Awards Program will
be held Friday, April 26, at Bp. m.
The Crestview High School Band
will perform at 10 a.m. this morn
ing (Thursday), April 25, at
Mnagham Auditorium. The Troy
Choral Group will present a pro
gram at 2 p.m. on May 2. Spring
Football Practice begins May 6
at ECHS and the FHA Annual
Awards Program will be held
May 9.

Company. He joined Great Nor
thern as Assistant Controller
in 1954 and was named Con
troller in 1962.
A native of Rocky Mount, N.
C., Mr. Ellen was graduated
from Mars Hill College and North
Carolina State. Before joining
Great Northern, he was associ
ated with Great Southern Land
and Paper Company, and before
that, with the Port Wentworth,
Georgia, Mill of Continental Can
Company. In 1965, when Great
Southern Land was merged with
Great Northern, Mr. Ellen be
came' assistant vice president
and resident manager of Great
Northern's mill at Cedar Springs,
Georgia.
Mr. Shinners came to Great
Northern in 1956. He was suc
cessively a plant engineer; Mana
ger of the Company’s mill at
East Millinocker, Maine; Mana
ger of the Millinocket mill; and
in 1965, assistant vice president
and resident manager for both
mills. A graduate of Louisiana
State University, Mr. Shinners
_ held various positions with Stone
& Webster and other important
engineering companies before
joining Great Northern. He is a
native of Poughkeepsie, N. Y.

Warren Cleveland
Warren Cleveland, manager of
the local ASCS office, will be the
president of the Blakely Lions
Club for the year 1968-69. Mr.
Cleveland was elected Tuesday
when the Club held its bi-monthly
meeting at the Town and Country
Club. He will assume the duties
of this Blakely service club, or
ganized in 1940, in July suc
ceeding President Vince Hilliard.
Elected to serve with the new
president were Edsel Bryan, Ist
vice-president; Stanley Houston,
2nd vice-president; Lonnie Ches
ter, 3rd vice-president; Marshall
Day, secretary-treasurer; J.
Frank Gilbert, tailtwister; Joe
Cannon, Liontamer; directors,
Charles Roberts, R. D. Hodges.
Holdover directors are Charlie
Dunning and Lysle McNeal.
Dr. C. D. Horton, pastor of
the Blakely First Baptist Church,
was the speaker. Doctor Horton,
who is president of the Inter-Club
Council, told of plans for the
establishment of a scenic and his
torical trail linking Charleston,
S C., Savannah and New Orleans,
La., three of the most interesting
cities in America. The highway,
to be known as the Pine Tree
Route, passes through Blakely.
The speaker enumerated the
benefits to ba accrued by Blak
ely with the heavy East-West
traffic which it is expected to
attract. Dr. Horton was intro
duced by Lion Dr. Whalen George,
who arranged the program.

Died Suddenly
Past Friday
Idus David Waller, 60, well
known and esteemed Early county
farmer, died in his sleep early
last Friday morning at his home
on RFD 3, in the New Hope
community. Death was attri
buted to a heart attack.
Mr» Waller was a native and
life-time resident of Early
county, and was born on October
26, 1907, the second son of Mr.
and Mrs. J. J. Waller. He was
a member of the New Hope Bap
tist Church where funeral ser
vices were held Saturday after
noon, 3 o'clock, conducted by
die Rev. A. IL Lanier and the
Rev. R. V. Sneed. Mr. Waller
was endowed with a sparkling
sense of humor and quick wit
which had endeared him to many
people all over the county. The
many beautiful floral arrange
ments and the large crowd of
friends and relatives in attend
ance upon these last rites attest
ed to the esteem and respect
in which he was held. Inter
ment was in the Blakely ceme
tery with the following, all nep
hews of the deceased, serving as
pall bearers: D?n Waller, Glen
Waller, David Cannon, Melvin
Jordan, Fred Waller and Carol
Waller. Honorary pall bearers
were John Moseley, Billy Gar
land, Bud Justice, Sam Owen,
Joe Owen, Curtis Warren, Joe
Bryan, Johnny Johnston, Pete
White, D. W. McLain, Frank
Reynolds, Jerry Mock. Manry-
Minter Funeral Home was in
charge of arrangements.
Survivors are the widow, Mrs.
Irene Sheffield Waller, two
daughters, Mrs. Hillary Thomas,
Blakely; Mrs. Joe Warren, Pana
ma City, Fla.; the parents, Mr.
and Mrs. J. IL J. Waller; one
brother, Luther Waller, two sis
ters, Miss Ermine Waller and
Mrs. J. T. Cannon all of Blak-
Ay, and three grandchildren.

Frank Kelly
Frank Kelly, a native of Blak
ely, Georgia, the son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Kelly of Early
County, began with Southern Bell
in 1940 in Jacksonville, Florida
and worked there until 1946 when
he transferred to Louisville,
Kentucky as an Accountant. He
later fulfilled assignments in At
lanta, Georgia and Columbia,
South Carolina before returning
to Florida in 1959 as South
Florida zXccounting Manager. He
was named General Accounting
Manager for Florida in Decem
ber 1964. Mr. Kelly graduated
from the University of Georgia
in 1940.

Died Thursday
Reese Cleveland Harris, re
tired Early County farmer, died
on Thursday last in a Gadsden,
Ala., hospital following a long
illness. A native of this county,
Mr. Harris had made his home
in Early county except for the
past few years when he went to
Gadsden to make his home with
a nephew, Thaxton Harris.
Mr. Harris was born June
22, 1881, the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Abbe Harris, hence was
86 years of age. He owned
and operated a large farm in
the Urquhart community until
his roti ’ament.
Final rites were conducted
Saturday morning, 11 o’clock,
in the chapel of Bryan Funeral
Home, by the Rev. Otis Guy.
Burial was in the Grier ceme
tery. Pall bearers were Ralph
Jenkins, Fred Sawyer, John

These seven attractive and outstanding homemakers will
vie for the Mrs. Georgia 1968 title in Atlanta May 8-11.
Which one will be crowned our state's outstanding mother
wife-citizen is anybody's guess but each of the areas repre
sented is already pulling for its titlist. The new Mrs. Geor
gia will be crowned during a pageant which begins at 10:00
p.m.. Friday. May 10 over a state-wide television network

trie, was the interesting speaker
at last Friday’s meeting of the
Blakely Rotary Club. Mr. Bius
spoke on making bequests to in
stitutions by individuals, effect
ing a savings on inheritance
taxes, and leaving memorials
at the same time.
Rotarian Emory Houston ar
ranged the program, and the
speaker was Introduced by Dr.
C, Q Horton, pastor of the Blak
ely First Baptist Church.
