Constituting the duly elected and
qualified Board of Commis
sioners of Roads and Revenues of
Late September and October
will usher in the beautiful fall
foliage of trees and shrubs and
bring new highlights to garde
ners’ enjoyment. And there is
another facet to fall beauty that’s
sometimes neglected. This is
‘the garden chrysanthemum.
With their many flowers of
burnished gold, orange, yellow,
lavender, pink and red, mums
truly exhibit the wonders of na
ture’s paint brush. All of this
beauty from garden mums just
doesn’t happen by fitself. It is
the result of action taken during
last spring and throughout the
summer and early fall.
Mum care during August and
September will determine the a=-
mount and quality of bloom.-
Water may be the most limiting .
factor. While in some gardens
insects and diseases may cause
problems. Both of these may be
overcome with good sanitation
and thorough watering.
Mums use considerable a
mounts of soil moisture. This
may be somewhat difficult to
understand since they prefer a
well drained soil. To illustrate
this, let's compare a mum plant
with our body. We need cer
tain amounts of water daily. It
would seem rather foolish if we
tried to drink all that we need
as soon as we got out of bed
each morning. The same ap
plies to mums, except it is wiser
to figure their water needs on
a weekly basis.
What does this mean? Water
your chrysanthemum plantings
thoroughly once a week. Do not
drown them but apply enough
to wet the soil down to a depth
of ten inches or so. Do not wet
the foliage any more than is
necessary. Layyour gardenhose
in the flower bed and allow a
slow stream of water to runover
the bed. After one hour or two,
most of the water will begin to
run off. It's time to move the
hose to a new location.
Mums suffer from insect and
disease problems. Insects such
as aphids and white flies damage
the foliage and stems. Leaf
and stem diseases such as mil
dew and leaf blight may play
havoc with your plantings. To
prevent damage from these
‘‘critters’’ a regular spraying
or dusting is highly advisable.
Use an all purpose insecticide
and fungicide to do this job.
Malathion will clean up the in
gsects and ferbam and fermate
will prevent the foliage diseases.
Be sure to read the instructions
carefully and apply the materials
as directed. Spray or dustcare-

fully-~this means apply the ma
terial to the top and bottom
surfaces of the leaves. Make
thorough coverage of stems and
flower buds as they develop.
It s a good idea to remove
and burn any foliage that shows
signs of trouble. Many garde-.
ners will occasionally spray the
soil surface in case disease or
ganisms or insects are lurking
to attack.
Make your garden mums the
best ever. You will certainly
enjoy them. A vase of these
flowers will make a nice tran
sition from summer vacations
to school days. Remember fall
flower shows will be coming up.
Garden mums may just supply
your winning entry.

Naturally, the male plant will
produce male flowers but will
never produce any fruit. Until
recent years this male plant
was necessary in a muscadine
grape planting for the female
kinds to produce fruit. The
male plants furnished pollen that
must be transmitted to the female
plant flowers by wind and bees.
Therefore, there must be inter
plantings made for adequate fruit
production.
During recent years a new kind
of muscadine has been intro
duced by the plant breeders. It
is a perfect flowering plant that
has both female and male parts

desirable to use this kind in
