Mrs. Don Curran begins the beautification program in Blakely as
she directs OEO employees in clearing the vines and overgrown
shrubbery on the lot the Blakely Garden Club has chosen for
beautification this spring.
The Blakely Garden Club is
sponsoring a Clean-up and Beau
tification Campaign in Blakely.
They emphasize the slogan on
the front page of the Early County
News "Pull for Blakely or Pull-
Out’’ as the campaign gets under
way to eliminate litter and beau
tify negelected spots.
They have chosen the plot near
the Central of Georgia depot
for a flower bed and small lawn.
Mrs. Don Curran, Beautification
Chairman, said, "The rose is
the Garden Club's flower and
the dogwood is the tree. Al
ready several dogwood trees are
growing there and we are plant
ing more.’’
“The semi circle in the center
will be planted with roses. Mrs.

urday were Mrs. Wilbur Evans
and Mrs. L. J. George.
Mrs. Claude Turner, state
president, presided.
Routine business matters were
discussed. Committee reports
were given. Mrs. Evans, state
chiarman of the research com
.mittee, stated that sixty chap
ters had responded to requests
for information concerning mem
bers.
Host Chapters were Delta and
Alpha Upsilon. Luncheon was
served at Baconsfield Club
House.

the marriage of her daughter,
Norma Jean, to Eugene Robert
.Daughtry, Jr. Norma Jean is
the daughter of Mrs. Roy Mer
ritt and the late Lintry Williams
of Shellman, Ga. Eugene Robert
Daughtry, Jr., is the son of Mrs.
Nell Daughtry, Blakely, and E. R.
Daughtry, Sr., of Thomasville,
Ala.
The event took place at the
home of Mrs. Nell Daughtry with
Dr. C. D. Horton performing the
ceremony.
The couple will reside in Mil
ledgeville, Georgia.
Birth
Mr. and Mrs. David Dunn an
nounce the birth of a daughter,
Sara Elizabeth, born February
23, at Early ^Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Dunn is the former Jimmie
Henry of Colquitt, Georgia.
Paternal grandparents are
Mrs. Cyllene Dunn and the late
Mr. E. H. Dunn; Maternal grand
parents are Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Henry, of Colquitt, Georgia.
Mrs. Bob Jordan and Mr. and
Mrs. T, T. Swan visited relatives
in Atlanta last week end.
Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Alex
ander, Jr., of Athens, Georgia
were week end guests of his
mother, and the Norman Alex
anders.
Mrs. J. N. Barnes, her chil
dren and grandchildren were to
gether at the home of her son,
Coy Barnes, in Roswell, Ga.,
the past week end. They are:
Mr. and Mrs. James Barnes,
Donna, Susan, and David of Al
bany; Mr. and Mrs. Coy Barnes,
Robin, Kinberly, and Nelson of
Roswell; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest
Barnes, Margaret Ann and Wan
da of Albany; Sammy Barnes,
Georgia State College, Atlanta;
and Amelia Barnes, Free Will
Baptist Bible College, Nashville,
Tenn. It was a special occasion
to get acquainted with the two
new grandchildren. Wanda Carol,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest
Barnes was born January 20.
Nelson Coy was born February

Dr. and Mrs. William Serrel
Harper and children. Brad and
Helen, of Mobile, Ala., were
week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs.
John Harper. Dr. and Mrs.
Harper left Blakely Sunday for
Louisville, Ky. to attend a Sur
geon's Convention there. Other
guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harper
during the week-end included Mr.
and Mrs. W. H. Phillips and chil
dren, Jan. Cindy and Nancy, Mr.
and Mrs. Joe Powell and chil
dren, Camille and John; Mr. and
Mrs. Drew Thompson and son,
Don: Mrs. W. A. Harper; and
Don McCorkle.
Mr. and Mrs. James W. Rich
ardson attended the American
Pulpwood Association annual
meeting in New York City last
week. While there the Richard
sons attended several Broadway
stage shows and picture shows.

week-end with her parents, Mr.

Mrs. Leonard Rogers Harris

Wed on February 23
Miss Brenda Sue Lott, daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Cleon Lott
of Blakely, became the bride of
Leonard Rogers Harris, son of
Mrs. Ray Harris and the late
Mr. Harris of Blakely, in a double
ring ceremony, Sunday, February
23, at three o’clock in the after
noon in the South side Baptist
Church with the pastor, the Rev.
A. H. Lanier, officiating.
Traditional colors of green
and white were used in the altar
decorations. Three seven
branched candelabra held white
wedding candles which were
lighted by the ushers before the
ceremony. On either side of the
altar, fluted weddingbaskets held
arrangements of white chrysan
themums, gladioli, carnations
and gypsophila. Jade fern trees
formed the background. The pews
were marked with white satin
ribbon, crystallized wedding
bells, stephonotis, tulle and satin
tubing. The windows held white
lighted tapers and leather leal
greenery.
Mrs. Jack Spivey, organist,
presented a program of wedding
music.
Earl Ware served as Mr. Har
ris' best man. Ushers were
Larry Harris and Billy Davis.
Miss Debra Sue Lott, sister
of the bride was her honor at
tendant. She wore an empire
A-line floor length gown of nile
green organiza, enhanced with a
band of grosgrain ribbon and
white band of scalloped embroi
dery. Her three-tiered veil was
caught to a circulet of pompons
of organza loops and forget-me
nots.
The bridesmaids, Miss Debra
Kay Allen and Miss Theresa
Moore, were dressed alike in
green A-line floor length gowns
of crepe with rolled collars.
Their headpieces were similar
to that of the maid of honor.
The attendants carried bouquets
of white orchids with yellow
throats centered in clusters of
Margaret daisies and yellow tulle
puffs, caught at the bottom with
streamers of yellowpicot ribbon,
arranged in a cascade design.
The bride, given in marriage
by her father, wore a lovely
bridal gown of skinner satin and
re-embroidered Alencon lace;
tlie empire bodice featured a high
scalloped neckline, long pointed
sleeves and lace motifs appli
qued over the entire dress with
pearl highlights. Her chapel
train was detachable. Her head
piece was a small pillbox and an
illusion mantilla outlined in lace
with a blusher veil.
She carried an exquisite cas
cade of three white orchids and
stephanotis sprinkled naturally
into clusters and re-appearing
to form soft garlands which fell
from the bouquet accented with
puffs of white tulle and satin.
Streamers of picot ribbon, tied
with love knots fell from the
bouquet. The bride's bouquet
topped a white Bible .given to
the bride by the groom.
The bride’s mother wore a
winter-white two-piece knit suit
with bone accessories and yellow
gloves. Her corsage was a yellow
cymbidium orchid, to match her
suit. ,
The groom’s mother chose a
pale blue dress with matching
jacket, accented with blue ac
cessories. Her corsage was a
pink cymbidium orchid.
Following the ceremony a
reception was held in the church
parlors, given by the bride's
parents. A color scheme of
yellow and white was used
throughout the dining hall. Mrs.
Larry Harris kept the bride’s
book. The table where the guests
registered held a bud vase with
yellow and white daisies.
The bride's cake table and re
freshment table were overlaid
with white linen cloths, accented
with streamers and bows of yel
low satin ribbon and wedding

Country Jubilee
To Be Held Feb. 28
Have you made your plans to
attend the "Country Variety Jubi
lee"? The show, presented by the
Ella Jones PTA will be held
tomorrow night, February 28, at
8 p.m. in the Mangham Audi
torium. No advance tickets.

of Radio Station WBBK will be
master of ceremonies. Several
of our own Early County citizens
will perform a number you must
see, and then you won t believe
it.
Lots of music and plenty of
fun are in store for those who
come. Mrs. Jim Kitchens and
Mrs. Sam Zipperer are chair
men of this project.

couple left for a wedding trip to
Florida.
For traveling the bride wore
a two -piece suit of rayon and
cotton in a lovely shade of peach;
the rolled collar was accented
with pearl buttons. Her acces
sories were white. She wore an
orchid corsage lifted from her
bridal bouquet.
The couple will make their
home at 419 River Street,
Blakely. Mr. Harris is employ
ed at Giles and Laslie, M.D.,
Medical Building, South Main,
Blakely, as a technician.
Out-of-town guests attending
were Mr. and Mrs. Willie A
vant, and Mr. and Mrs. Alfonso
Tillman all of Brundidge, Ala
bama; Mr. and Mrs. H.P. Allen
of Valdosta, Georgia.

ing from surgery at Southeas
tern General Hospital, Dothan,
Ala., she is in room 251. Friends
will be glad to learn she is im
proving.
Mrs. Jack Lynn of Charleston,
S.C. is in Blakely to visit her
parents and be with her father,
Ralph M. Hobbs, who is in Early
Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Ruth Massengale of
Woodbury, Ga., and Mrs. Frances
.Adams of Thomaston, Ga. are in
Blakely this week to be with their
parents, Mrs. Tom Whatley, who
is in Southeastern General Hos
pital, Dothan, Ala., and Mr. What
ley who is in Early Memorial
Hospital.
The Inter-Club Council will
meet Thursday, March 6.
Rock and Mineral
Society to present
First Show
The Albany Rock and Mineral
Society of the Albany Area Junior
Museum is presenting our first
Show of Rocks and Minerals this
week and the first two weeks of
March at Midtown Mall in Al
bany.
"We expect to have a most
outstanding show of rock and
mineral specimen and lapidary
work showing what some of our
members have cut and polished
out of ou native stones. We
have some very outstanding Jas
per that cuts and polishes beau
tifully from Arlington. We have
petrified wood from Ft. Gaines.
(I am displaying a set of book
ends made from the Ft. Gaines
Wood) and we also have some
outstanding Chalcedony in white,
black, pink and blue-lavender
from the Arlington area,'' Mrs.
Marjoree Botte of Albany said.
"Our club is made up of about
35 family memberships and we
expect to have at least 20 making
exhibits. We have members
from Albany, Arlington, Dawson,
Adel, Thomasville and Barnes
ville."
A cordial invitation is extend

Charles L Bruner
Completes Basic
Training Feb. 21
Pvt. Charles L. Bruner, son
of Mrs. Clara Bruner, Blakely,
Georgia, graduated from Basic
Training at Fort Benning, Ga.,
February 21. Upon graduation,
he was sent to Fort Polk, La.
for twelve weeks intensive In
fantry training. Attending the
graduation in Columbus were
his mother and uncle, W. J.
Starr of Arlington.
