Mrs. Bill Fariss has returned
home after a two weeks visit
with her son, Lt. Col. William
E- Fariss and family of Lug
ana Hills, Calif.; and her bro
ther, Wardlow Hammack, at
Hemet, California. While there
she went to Disneyland, Knotts
Berry Farm, toured the N.B.C.
Studio at Burbank and the old
mission San Juan Capistrano and
other places of interest in Calif,
and then on to Tijuana and Eni
nada, Mexico.
Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Tooke,
Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Joy Tully
of Colquitt, attended the funeral
last Friday of little Neva Jan
Duke, seven year old daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Duke of
Webb, Ala. The little girl was
the niece of Mr. and Mrs. Ju
lian Tooke, Jr., of Dothan, Ala.
Havous Houston is undergoing
treatment in the VA hospital in
Tyskegee. His address is UA
-BW-3-1S in care of the VA hos
pital, Tuskegee, Ala.
Marvin C. Butler, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Jesse Butler, 125 Rear
Howell Ave., Blakely; has finish
ed a course at Park Job Center,
Pleasonton, California, graduat
ing Monday, April 28, in elec
tronics. He is presently em
ployed in San Francisco, Calif.
A 1/c Carlie Bell is at home
this week from Lackland Air
Force Base, Texas, visiting his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. A.
Bell, Claude Bell and Mr. and
Mrs. Cary Logan. Miss Alita
Bell of Smyrna and Mr. and
Mrs. Tom Bell and children of
Albany were in Blakely during
the week end.

Council Fire at Lake Kolomoki

The Blakely Gamp Fire Girls
held their annual Grand Council
Fire Saturday, May 3, at Lake
Kolomoki, Kolomoki State Park.
The evening began with a picnic
attended by approximately 175
Camp Fire Girls, Blue Birds
and their parents, family and
sponsors.
The Grand Council Fire cere
mony began with the guardians,
Mrs. Frank Gilbert, Aowakiya
CFG; Mrs. Lowrey Stone, E Ha
Wee CFG; Mrs. William Powell
and Mrs. Wayion Lacey, Wee
Hah Tanki CFG, giving the Wohelo
call and the girls responding.
The girls entered the camp fire
circle singing the Processional,
led by Cindy Bridges, Nancy Stone
and Pam Hodges, carrying
torches. Afte r lighting the fire
the girls sang the "Law of the
Camp Fire’’, then led the
audience in the pledge to the flag
and sang the "Battle Hymn of the
Republic".
The Blue Birds were welcomed
to the Council Fire', they sang
the Blue Bird Song.
The accomplishments of those
who had acquired rank were
acknowledged by the guardians:
Mrs. Gilbert, Mrs. Stone, Mrs.
Powell and Mrs. Lacey.
Camp Fire Girls receiving sil

awarded at the ceremonial) were:

The girls who have been in
Camp Fire for five years and
for three years were presented
honor symbols to be sewn on
their costumes. Five year a
wards went to: Phyllis Gil
bert, Donna Waller, Terri Al
ford, Sarah Johnson. They
were presented red and navy
square symbols.
Three year awards, navy and
red round symbols went to Alida
Lightsey, Julie Lynn Smith, Cindy
McDowell, Tammy McDowell,
Faye James, Cindy Bridges, Ann
Askew, Debra Chambliss, Lynn
Cos, Ann Day, Joy Lacey, Anna
Lightsey, and Beth Powell.

The Merry Blue Birds flew up
to become Camp Fire Girls and
were welcomed to the Council
Fire by the other Camp Fire
Girls, who removed the Blue
Bird weskit and put on their camp
fire tie. Members of the Merry
Blue Birds who flew up are:

Sherry Barron, Lee Ann Davis,
Becky Winkler, Candi Everson,
Sharon Waller, Marjorie Ken

The Camp Fire burned low
on the bank of Lake Kolomoki
as the Camp Fire Girls slowly
ascended the bank, singing the
Recessional.
Garden Club
to meet May 8
at Fleming Cottage
The Blakely Garden Club will
meet Thursday, May 8, with Mrs.
Hoyle Fleming at the Fort Gaines
Cottage for a covered dish lunch
eon.
Members are to meet Thurs
day morning at 10 a.m.. First
Baptist Church paved parking lot.
After lunch, a tour of Bush’s
Garden is planned.
The Blakely OES will have
their regular meeting Thurs
day night, May 8, at 8 p.m.
Boys State
The P.H. Fitzgerald Post 11,
American Legion, will send six
Early County High Juniors to
Boys State, June 8-14, at Wood
ward Academy, College Park,
Georgia.
Delegates will be Dewey Can
non, Clink Alexander, Barry Clo
wer, William Ricketson, Tim
Everson and Tommy Harvey. Al
ternates are Robert Pullen, Jerry
Murkerson and Bill Warrick.

Chairman for the local American
Legion; H.T. (Son) Jones is Com

The Early County High Science
Club and their sponsors, Mrs.
Charles Shierling and Mrs. Steve
Slappy, attended the Fernbank
Science Center in Atlanta on April
25 and 26. Club members taking
the trip were: Steve Emigholz,
Doug Thompson, Rita Spruiell,
Joanna Dean, Danny Brewer, Ul
mer Bridges, Eddy Chancy,
Lynda Parker, Larry Fussell,
Sheri Fennell, Ed Bryan, John
Underwood, Kathy Hamrick, Veda
Moore, and Timmy Craft.
They attended the science cen
ter on Friday afternoon. The cen
ter contained a wide variety of
exhibits. One of the most in
teresting exhibits was one on the
explanation and similated flight
of the Apollo moon project. Other

exhibits included displays of dif
ferent minerals, aquariums, a
few snakes, and different scien
tific equipment. The club made
a return trip to the Fernbank
Science Center on Saturday to
see the Planetarium, a very in
teresting similated view of the
heavens and the constallations
it contains at different seasons
of the year.
Before returning home, the
club stopped by Stone Mountain.
A few of the members under
took the task of climbing it, while
the others took the easy way
up on the skylift.
