Aiderman, Jr. Local Policemen Complete FBI Training Course All eight Blakely Policemen recently completed a five-week training course at Bainbridge, Georgia according to Chief of Police Carl Gilbert. The school was sponsored by the Bainbridge Police with FBI agents as in structors. The local policemen attended in groups of four; classes were held in the mornings when four from the Blakely Force attended and repeat classes in the after noon afforded a time for the other four to attend. The Blak ely Police Force is nowaneight hour work schedule. Having just completed this school of instruction, it is doubtful that the Blakely police will participate in additional law enforcement training under the Lower Chattahoochee Valley Area Planning and Development Commission, Chief Gilbert said. The local police and sheriff's department are working with Joe A. Cemitg Chattahoochee Valley APDC at Lumpkin that on hand for distri bution is $8,939.00 for law enforcement training. Already the Columbus Police Department is expected to receive $5,800 and Musogee County Police De partment, $1,200 and the Musco gee County Sheriff’s Department, $750.00 of the almost $9,000 available through the federal Om nibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968. Each sheriff's and police de partment in the seven county commission is to receive bene fit of some of these funds, which must be used within a two-year period. Success to All Who Pay Their Honest Debts — “Be Sure You Are Right, Then Go Ahead” Viet Nam veteran Rotary speaker Blakely Rotarians heard an interesting discussion of the Viet Nam war at last Friday's meet ing. The speaker was Major Frank B. Harbor of Fort Benning. Major Harbor spoke from first hand experiences as he has com pleted two tours of duty as a cam bat soldier. The speaker was introduced by Rotarian Earl Taylor who was program chairman for the day. President Pete Underwood pre sided at the meeting, the first of the new Rotary year. Visitors at the meeting includ ed Richard Allen and Ronald Slusarchuk, of the Chattahoochee Planning Commission, of Colum bus, guests of A. D. Jones, a native of Blakely and a retired Atlanta school teacher, died Tuesday, July 8, at a Monroe, Georgia hospital. Funeral ser vices were held Wednesday at Spring Hill, burial was in West view Cemetery, Atlanta. Miss Jones was born in Blak ely, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. ID Jones, who resided on College Street, Blakely. She taught in Atlanta for 25 years, including several years at George W. Adair Ele mentary School and Forest Park Elementary School, until her re tirement 10 years ago. She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Decatur and the United Daughters of the Con federacy. Survivors include a sister Mrs. Frances J. Knox, of Mon roe. Houston named to a top office, American Legion The Department of Georgia, American Legion and Auxiliary Convention was held in Savannah, July 11-13. The business meet ings of the Legion were conducted by Commander Karl Conradi of Thomasville, Ga. William E. Galbraith, immedi ate past National Commander, was key speaker. Mr. Galbraith is now deputy Secretary of Agri culture in charge of Agricultural Stablilization and Conservation Service- The election of officers was held Sunday at 12 o’clock. Can- Mrs. Singletary's funeral services held Saturday Mrs. Viola Hatcher Jones Sin gletary, 87, of Columbia, Ala-, and a former resident of this county died in Early Memorial Hospital on Thursday, July 10, after an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Singletary was bom in Calhoun County July 20, 1881, and had lived in Columbia for the past 21 years. She was a member of the Columbia Bap tist Church. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the Chapel of Manry-Jordan Fun eral Home, conducted by the Rev. James A. Brown and the Rev. A. H. Lanier. Burial was in the Blakely cemetary. Pall bearers were Sid, Guy and George Jones, Larry Coleman, Billy Joe Hollar, Jack Carney, Tommy Owen, Bennie Hensel. Survivors are one son, L. B. (Casey) Jones, of Blakely; one sister, Mrs. R. E. Hollaway, Blakely; a brother, John N. Hatcher, Porterdale, Ga.; 9 grandchildren, 10 great grand children and 2 great-greatgrand children- Early Co. 4-H'ers earn honors at Rock Eagle Early County Junior and Senior 4-H Club members returned from the Southwest District Project Achievement meeting at Rock Eagle 4-H Club Center with many honors. During the three-day event, the 4-H'ers were given the op portunity to present demonstra tions in their selected projects. Also, District 4-H officers were elected for the coming year. Well presented demonstrations earned District honors for four teen Early County 4-H’ers- Jun ior District winners were: Ray Durham, Agronomy; and Debra Waller, Corn Meal Muffins. In addition to these, Early County had five second place winners: Mike Ellis, Senior Rifle; Kerry Waller, Senior Landscaping; Cliff Sheffield, Junior Veterinary Science; Nancy White, Senior Canning; Bill Williams, Senior Public Speaking. (Neil) De Rosa, 47, head of Georgia Tech's placement bureau, and who died of a heart attack in Leningrad, Russia, on July 5, was interned in the Blakely cemetery Monday afternoon. Memorial services were held in Atlanta’s First Methodist Church Sunday afternoon. Manry-Jordan Funeral Home was in charge. Mr. De Rosa was in Russia accompanying 11 Tech students on a two month YMCA exchange tour of Russia. A native of New York City, Mr. De Rosa was a 1954 graduate of Tech. He had been director of placement since 1960. He was also president of the Southern College Placement Association. Survivors are the widow, the former Miss Virginia Holman, of Blakely, and five children, two sons, Neil Holman De Rosa and Thornton Holman De Rosa, three daughters, Virginia Ann, Robin Elizabeth and Lindsey De Rosa, all of Atlanta. Ser vices will begin at 8:00 o'clock P. M. Homecoming at Milford Baptist church Sunday Milford Baptist Church, Leary, Georgia, will observe Home coming Sunday, July 20. Estab lished in 1834, the historic church has served in the community for many years. Homecoming services will mark the begin ning of Revival Services Sun day evening at 8;00 p.m. Guest speaker for Home coming Sunday morning will be the Rev. Ronnie McKenzie, for mer pastor, and now pastor of First Baptist Church, Seaville, Florida. Dinner will be served on the church grounds after the morning services, and an after noon program of singing will be gin at 2:00 p.m. Guest speaker for the Revival Services, July 20-25, will be the Rev. PULL FOB BLAKELY -OB FULL OUT |3.09 FEB ANNUM City of Blakely Election set for August 5 The City of Blakely will hold a regular election on Tuesday, August 5, at which time two Councilmen will be elected to serve the years 1970-71. Holdover Councilmen are James B. Murdock, Jr., and Wayne Foster, whose terms ex tend through 1970 and Mayor Alex Howell who was elected at this time last year for a two year term. Councilmen whose terms expire . December 31, 1969 are: Guy H. Dunaway and A. J. Gentry. Candidates mayqualify with the Mayor or at the City Clerks office, deadline is Monday, July 21. Citizens who are qualified, and not registered to vote in this election, have until 5 p.m. Monday, July 21, to register at the City Hall. At the present time no candidates have quali fied- Auto accident claims life of Bluffton youth Larry Miliner, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Grady Miliner, of Bluf fton, died instantly as the result of an automobile accident in Ed ison on Wednesday night of the past week. Young Miliner, a 1968 graduate of Clay County High School, was employed by the Pamco Company of Edison, and was a member of the Army Reserve, having re cently completed basic training. He was born in Cuthbert, but had lived in Bluffton all of his life and was a member of the Bluff ton Methodist Church where fun eral services were held Friday conducted by the Rev. Ray Wilder Internment was in the Biuffton cemetery, Manry-Jordan Funer al Home in charge, and the fol lowing serving as pall bearers: Kenneth Giles, Johnny Bruner, Don Wayne Cox, Will Knighton, Randy Parker, Johnny Edison, Robert Harrell and Ricky Cro zier. Survivors, in addition to the parents, are two brothers, Char les Lamar and Harry Miliner, a sister, Mrs. Jimmie Ann Mil iner, all of Bluffton, and grand mother, Mrs. Emma Green, of Columbia, Alabama. at 11:00 a.m. and each evening at 8;00 p.m. Nelson J.
