in Door Contest

Mrs. Ralph Scarborough, first place winner in the Blakely
Garden Club's Christmas Door Contest and her green velvet
and gold prize winning door.

the Blakely Garden Club.
The yellow door and yellow
panel wall of the porch formed
a perfect background for the
green velvet rings, graduating
in size, on the door and simi
lar single wreaths, centered be
tween the windows along the
porch, gave a Christmacy look
to the contemporary brick house.
A potted pink Debutante camel
lia was presented to the Scar
boroughs as first place winners.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles De Loach
on McDowell Ave. captured
second place: Mr. and Mrs. Hal
Gleaton on Southside Drive, third
place; and Mr. and Mrs. Hal
Clinkscales on McDowell Ave.,
across the street from the De-
Loach home, received honorable
mehtion. Potted plants were
presented to the'Winners.
Judges for the Door Contest
were: Mrs. Linton West and
Mrs. John Hunt both of Cuth
bert; and Mrs. Ralph Balkcom
of Georgetown, Georgia. Mrs.
Lloyd George, president of the
Blakely Garden Club, toured the
city with the judges as they
appraised the merits of the door
decorations.

the Christmas tree featured su
gared decorations.
The dining table was overlaid
with a gold cloth. The beauti
fully appointed table was centered
with an arrangement of red
roses. The meal was served
buffet style- Attending besides
the judges, the honor guests,
were Mrs- Lloyd George, Mrs.
Robert Stuckey, Mrs. Eton Cur
ran and co-hostess, Mrs. Ralph
Hutchins.
During the evening Mrs. Mad
dox played several selections on
the Hammond organ.

Tuesday, December 16, was the
date for the quarterly Officer’s
and Teacher's conference at the
First Free Will Baptist Church.
Twenty one officers and teachers
enjoyed a barbeque prior to the
meeting. This meeting is a
seminar type gathering at which
church leaders discuss the im
provement of future programs of
the church.
A new slant was given to church
visitation with an emphasis upon
the expansion of the Sunday School
and CTS departments.

Ist Marine Division.
While serving with this unit
he received the following: The

Navy Unit Citation Ribbons, Viet
namese Crossof Gallentry, Com
bat Action Ribbon, Vietnamese
Service Ribbon, Vietnamese
Campaign Ribbon.
CPL Temples is now home on
a 30-day leave and then will leave
for Vietnam again for six months.
Charles L. Bruner
promoted Sgt. in
Chu Lai, Vietnam
SP/4 Charles L, Bruner, son
of Mrs. Clara S. Bruner, was
recently promoted to Sergeant.
Sgt. Bruner is stationed with the
Americal Division in Chu Lai,
Vietnam. Chu Lai is approxi
mately 60 miles south of Da
Nang. He entered the Army
December 4, 1968 and has been
in Vietnam since May, 1969. He
is a 1966 graduate of Early
County High School. He recently
spent his R & R in Bangkok,
Thailand and while he was there
he telephoned his mother and
fam 11 y. Sgt. Bruner is the brother
of Mrs. Curtis Smith, Jr., Mrs.
Joelyne Abston, Jacky and Starr
lyn Bruner. He should be return
ing to the states in April, 1970.

Mrs. L. D. Varnum of 201 Ever

ving with the Ninth Separate Bulk
Fuel Company, a unit of the new
ly formed Fifth Marine Expedi
tionary Brigade at Camp Pendle
ton, Calif.
His company provides sup, ly
and transport of fuel necessary
to sustain the vehicles of the
brigade during operations.

Barnes and Jones
promoted after
basic training
Grady H. Barnes, 20, and
Ricky Jones. 19, have been
promoted to garae E-2 on gradu
ation from basic combat training.
Both privates were assigned to
Company A, 4th Battalion, Ist
Brigade, United States Army
Training Center, Infantry.
The promotions were awarded,
two months earlier than usual,
under an Army policy providing
incentive for outstanding train
ees. They were based on range
firing and physical combat pro
ficiency test scores, military
bearing and leadershfo potential.
During their eight weeks at the
Training Center, Privates Bar
nes and Jones were taught basic
infantry skills —firing live am
munition under simulated com
bat cond<ric"s, protective mea
sures and first aid for chem
ical, biological and radio
logical attacks, military
bearing and courtesy, and the
use of modern weapons.
Private Barnes is a 1967 gra
duate of Early County High School,
Blakely, Ga., and attended Auburn
University. He is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Harold L. Barnes, Rt.
5, Blakely.
Private Jones is a 1969 grad
uate of Massey Technological
Institute, Jacksonville, Fla., with
an associate of science degree
in electronics technology, he is
the son of Mrs- Alice M. Jones,
653 Cherry St., Blakely, Ga.

Phillipine Is.
L/CPL Edward Ashley Tem
ples, 19, is now in Sawgley Point,
Phillipine Island, under medical
treatment for wounds received
in Vietnam in September, while
serving with the First Marine
Division.
Mr. and Mrs. Ken Larson and
children, Maria and David of
Dallas, Texas, are visiting her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Josh Da
vis in"Blakely, during the Christ
mas holidays- The Larsons re
cently moved to Texas from At

The Blakely Woman’s Club gave the Blakely Convalescent
Home a hairdryer for Christmas. Mrs. James M. Kitchens,
president of the Woman’s Club, delivered the gift Friday morn
ing and is shown setting the dryer up for use in the room of
Mrs. Pearl Haire of Richland, Georgia.
New Hope-Cuba
wins award
for Improvement
The New Hope-Cuba Commun
ity Club was judged first place
winner in the Early County Com
munity Improvement Program
for 1969.
The program sponsored by the
Blakely-Early County Chamber
of Commerce and conducted with
the cooperation of '■he Early
tension Service is a program
of self-improvement among the
various community clubs of Early
County. Standards of competing
are established by the County
Extension Service and scrap
books are kept by the commu
nities. These scrapbooks are
judged and winners are select
ed.

man of the Chamber’s Commu
nity Projects Committee, pre
sented the first place check to

the New Hope-Cuba Community

Va.
The future bridegroom was
graduated from South Georgia
College, where he was presi
dent of the Debate Club, and
attends the U n i v e r s i t y of
Georgia.
The wedding will be Dec. 27
at the Holy Trinity Episcopal
Church in Decatur.
