While preparing for the Of

Tribute To
Mrs. Wyatt Alexander
One hundred and forty-seven
years ago Benjamin J. Collier
gave the land which is now down
town Blakely to Early County,
to be used as the county seat,
and the site was named Blakely.
Mrs. Fannie Alice Jones Alex
ander, 96, the granddaughter of
Benjamin Collier was the third
generation in the Collier-Jones-
Alexander families who saw 96
years of the span of 147 years
of growth and development of this
community and county.
Mrs. Alexander died Saturday,
January 8, 1972. It is remark
able that in only three genera
tions a city the size of Blakely
could grow from that little hill
ideally situated for a town, in
1825. The land included the four
acres of the Court Square and
approximately seven additional
acres, probably the lots where
the stores are now located around
the square. There is no record
prises for others. This time she
was on the receiving end of
the surprise and party.
A birthday cake was cut and
served with ice cream, chips
and - dips, and coffee. Mrs.
Brewer was presented gifts by
those attending.
The Official Visit of Mrs.
Kirkpatrick will be Thursday,
January 13 at 8 p.m. at the
Masonic Hall. A covered dish
dinner will be served at seven
o’clock in the dining hall.
of the transaction. Collier
was one of the earliest settlers
in Early County, he resided on
the lands bordering Blue Creek.
His daughter, Louvenia Jane
Collier, married Augustus Lee
Jones, who moved to Early
County from Florida. They were
the parents of Fannie Alice
Jones, who married Wyatt H.
Alexander, a Blakely physician in
1895.
Fannie Alice Jones began
teaching school in 1891 at the
age of sixteen. Some of her stud
ents in the first grade at the
school on South Main Street were
Kathleen Odum Smith, John H.
Williams (Sr.) and D. H. Mc-
Dowell. She taught school for
over thirty years and after re
tiring continued to tutor students
at her home on South Main Stre
et. For many years after her
husband's death, she managed
her farms.
Even after she began renting
out her lands, her love for
flowers and shrubs, and the
satisfaction of digging in the soil
and improving her yard, drew her
out into the yard on sunny days,
where her friends would find her
even as she was recuperating.
A member of the First Baptist
Church, she took an active part
in Sunday School for many years.
She meant much to the civic,
social and educational growth
of the community. Her favorite
occupations after she reached
her ninetieth birthday have been
reading and knitting.

Sunshine dub
visits Ft. Walton
byway of slides
The Sunshine Club met Wed
nesday at the Southside Baptist
Church and members made a
trip to Fort Walton Marina on
the Gulf byway of color slides
shown by Mrs. Don Curran.
The slides showed the mem
bers of two Sunday School Clas
ses at the Southside Church as
they saw the seals perform; the
porpoise show and the Under
water Show at the Marina. Later
in the evening the girls and their
Sunday School teachers went
swimming in the Gulf.
Other slides were of the GA
Day Camp at Kolomoki State
Park and Vacation Bible School
at the church. All of these slides
showed activities of the young
people of the church, centering
around Blakely youth. Other
slides were added to the pre
sentation because of their color
and beauty. The program drew a
round of applause from the Senior
Citizens, who could not make the
tours, but were able to enjoy
“being-there” with the young
folks with the attractive slides.
The devotional was given by
Lonnie Chester, Superintendent
of Schools who talked on “Your
Relationship with God”.
The birthday cake was divided
between two in attendance who
have birthdays in January, 1972,
Mrs. A. H. Lanier and Reubvn
Jackson. Light refreshments
were served to the twenty-seven
attending.
