Two Baker Co. Men
Robbed And Killed
Two Baker County men were slain
last week for probably less than S2OO,
according to authorities.
The slayings and apparent armed
robbery took place at a rural Baker
County liquor store known for years
as “Timmons Store”, about noon this
past Thursday.
The two victims were store owner
Brown Timmons, in his late ‘6o’s, and
Edward Eugene Maples, 68, a former

Another undercover drug investiga
tion here has led to the arrest of 61
year-old security guard Ray Smith of
Blakely.
Smith was arrested at his home Fri
day for alledgedly selling marijuana
to undercover officers from the
Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The suspect, a retired Early County
farmer, is charged with violating the

the former Western Auto and The
Shop building on South Main will hold
their Grand Opening this weekend

recently the Grand Prize Winner in
the dessert division of the National
Pecan Festival Cook-Off held in
Albany.
In addition to the trophy and ribbon
she is pictured with above, Stephanie

Maples managed to flee the scene,
driving two miles to alert his wife, at
home, who called authorities. EMS

the sale of marijuana did not take

Walk-A-Thon
Set For Hike
Here Saturday
This Saturday, October 2nd, is the
day of the Great Vashti Walk-A-Thon.
It is not too late to sign up to join 500
others from southwest Georgia to hike
the 20 miles to Odom Creek Park and
back. The host church, Blakely First
United Methodist, 301 College Street,
is where the walk begins and ends.
Check in any time after 7 a.m. for an 8
o’clock starting time.
A short devotional led by
Thomasville District Superintentent
Tom Johnson, will precede the start.
Then he and other Methodist
ministers including Dr. Hugh Davis,
Hand Memorial, Pelham Dr. John
McGowan, Blakely Fifst Methodist,
and Rev. Russell Elkins, Westview
Methodist, will lead the way. All ages
and denominations are invited to join

The Blakely Fire Department has
been re-certified for the year 1982 as
required by Georgia Law by the
Georgia Firefighter Standards and
Training Council.
Fire Display
A Fire Fighter Training and
Display will be in the King Plaza
Parking Lot Oct. 4, the beginning of
Fire Prevention Week which is Oct. 4 -
Oct. 11, 1982. The public is invited to
be there at 8 p.m.
The hiring requirements are as
follows - (a) Be at least 18 years of
age. (b) Not have been convicted of a
felony within 10 years prior to employ
ment. (c) Have a good moral
character as determined by investiga
tion under procedure approved by the
Council, (d) Be in good physical con
dition as determined by a medical ex
amination as approved by the Coun
cil. (e) Successfully pass the
minimum physical fitness re
quirements (2-3.1 through 2-3.7) of the
‘Fire Fighter Professional Qualifica
tions 1001’ published by the National

Festival Set Oct. 9
The Early County Historical Society
announces plans for its 11th annual
Arts and Crafts Festival scheduled for
Saturday, October 9, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
on the Square in Blakely. Artists and
craftsmen from the tri-state area
come to Blakely for this one day show
bringing arts and crafts of every
description for show and sale.
The festival kicks off at 10 a.m. with
a parade around the Square. Schedul
ed to appear in the parade are the

Band, Blakely Shriners Drum and
Bugle Corp, Melinda Murkerson’s
Gymnastics, Forestry Unit, antique

Local authorities searched Blakely
Sunday night and Monday for a
Sumter County escapee that was spot
ted at Mason Minit Market on South
Main.
The suspect, Tony Alton Hall, 28
year-old black male of Jacksonville,
Fla., was serving the first year of a
five-year sentence for aggrevated
assault.
He was spotted at the convenience
store about 10:30 p.m. Sunday night

Entertainment begins immediately
after the parade with the Early Coun
ty High School Marching Band giving
a mini concert. The concert wiU be

ly County Middle and High School
Choral Groups, square dancing, ballet
and unusual skating techniques by
Anna Hattaway of Dothan. All enter
tainment is free and takes place on
the south side of the Square.

Having combed the south part of
town, authorities were unable to cap
ture Hall. At last report, Hall was
believed spotted near Bainbridge.
However, authorities are not sure the
suspect has left the Blakely area.
