There’s an old adage in the
business world: I^ease equipment
that depreciates and purchase
things that appreciate in value.
This business theory might well be
applied to the acquisition of
automobiles by the general public.
With sticker prices now averaging
close to SIO,OOO, financing an
automobile purchase is becoming in
creasingly expensive.
When you finance a SIO,OOO car,
they usually ask you to put down
$2,000 to $3,000 cash, trade-in your
old car, or a combination of the two.
That’s a lot of money to have tied
up. If you had it in one of the new
fangled money-market funds, you
could be earning 16 to 17 percent in
terest (S4OO to SSOO a year.)
For people who have good credit
ratings, there’s another way to
finance the purchase of a car. It’s
called “finance leasing” and it
makes a lot of sense.
You work with an expert on the
auto leasing company and pick out
the car that has the best trade-in
value history, one that will give you
the lowest possible monthly pay
ment figure.
Let’s take that average SIO,OOO car
to see how it works.
The leasing company looks at the
resale value history of the car and
predicts that it will bring $4,000 in
three years (the terms of the lease).
This means that, in effect, your
true cost for the car is $6,000 - not the
full SIO,OOO. Why pay on SIO,OOO when
you can pay on $6,000.
Then they calculate your monthly
lease payments over the three-year

payments would come to around
$270, which is just about what you’d
be paying if you bought the car and
financed it.
But, when you lease, you don’t
have to make a down payment. You
just pick up your car and start driv
ing it. You pay your first month’s
payment in advance and pick it back
up again at the end of the lease.
When the three-year term is over,
they sell your old car and put you in
a new one. There’s no dickering with
dealers, no wondering if you’ve been
taken on the trade-in, no trying to
beat the experts in making a deal.
If you want to keep your old car for
another member of the family, or for
whatever reason, you can buy your
own, used car at a considerable dis
count off what you’d pay if you had
to buy it in the open market.
When you go out to lease, a car,
it’s a good idea to get several bids.
But watch out for a bidder that’s
way below the others with a monthly
payment that is too good to be true.
This is called low-balling and you
may end up paying a lot more at the
end of the lease period. If the leasing
company overestimates the resale
value of your car to bring down the
monthly payment figure, then you
have to make up the difference when
the car is finally sold. This could set
you back as much as SI,OOO.
And it’s a good idea to choose a
leasing company that’s not too
enamored with one make of car. An
independent leasing company, or a
dealer that readily buys other types
of cars for its leasing customers, can
get you the car with the best resale
value and lowest monthly payment.
