Tboemalloess of tbe expenditure in

spirit, disinterested patriotism of tbe
BofMtora SttplopStrfef lb® State, 1
take pleasure in testifying in regard
to both cases, that tbs people of Geor
gia'ows a debt of gratitude they carr
Barer caftce', to Messrs. Charles O'Con.
or, deremiab S, Black, Robert J.
Brant, David Dujly Field and Edgar
CotfiD,
Wixn t left tbe Executive office, 1
took tritb me the record ofj wa‘rants
drawn upon tbe treasury, tbe books
of receipts for them, and other papers
therewith connected, and the seal of
the Executive Department. It was
my purpose to retain these things in
my own custody, until I should sec in
the Erect!tiVe office a rightful incum
bent, anti then to restore them.
The removal of the books and pa
pery was simply a cautionary measure
for tny own piotcctiou. Not so with
the seal. That was a symbol of the
Executive authority; and although
devoid of intrinsic, material value, was
hallowed by a sentiment which forbade
its surrender to unauthorized hands.
•Afterwards, whilst I was in Washing
ton vainly seeking ti e interposition of
the Stipreme Court, a formal writlen
demand was made upon me by Gen.
Huger for a return of these articles,
with which I declined to comply, The
books and papers I herewith transmi:
to your Excellency, that they may re
sumo their place among the archives
of the State. With them, I also de
liver to you the seal of the Executive
Department. I derive high satisfac
tion from the reflection that it has nev
er been desecrated by the grasp of
military Usurper’s hand—never been
prostituted to authenticate official mis
deeds of an upstart Pretender. Unpol
luted as it came to me, I gladly place
it in the-hands of a worthy son of
Georgia—her freely chosen Executive
—my first legitimate successor. Antic
paling as the fruits of your administra

and lasting benefits to your confiding

ON SUNDAY, 10TH INST.,
From my plantation on Chattahoochee river,
a Sorrel Station, heavily built but rather low
and short, with right hind foot white and a
small white spot in his fore-head; about six
or seven years old. The name of the thief is
Thomas Minims, who has tight hair, a fair
complexion, blue eyes, is about five-feet six
inches high, weighs between 150 and 160
pounds, and aged about 20 years. When last
seen he was on the road leading from Spring
Creek to Bainbridge, supposed to be making
his way either to Albany, Ga., or Live Oak,
Fla., the latter of which places was his form
er home. A liberal reward will be paid for
the horse and thief, or for either.
