Personal.—It is with no .little pleasure that we chronicle a new addition to the female society of our cky, in the person of Miss Stien- inger, a young lady who arrived in our midst on last Sabbath morning. We have not yet had the pleasure of an introduction to’this tender lit tle bud of a fair one, and cannot say whether she be a blonde ora brunette, but this we do kno y, she does not wear waterfalls, Grccian- Bends, paint, of pat on airs, and we wish her a, long life of uninterrupted happiness. We learn that the famous “Shoo- Fly Minstleis” will treat our popula tion to one of their unique performan ces at an early day. Ip the array of talent they propose putting on the stage we might mention Parnell, Rasentcld, Engel, Johnston, and the inimitable Van Horn. Hurry up, boys, wc are anxiously awaiting you. Personal.—Last week we had a visit from Sam Morton, the editori al genius who presides over and wields the destinies of that spright ly Democratic newspaper, the Miller County Star. Sam is just the man to conduct a newspaper, as is fully evidenced by the Star. We heard » very correct mathe matical remark from a young i&dy of ibis place on Sunday. She said figures won’t lie. We would aak her if a ccr* tain fashionable woman's figure telle the truth. Capt. H. T. Blocker, travelling agent for the Savannah Republican, visited us on last Monday. Our merchants now close their stores at six o’clock, which allows their clerks plenty ot time for recre ation. At Cost.—In order to enlarge-my store, I am now offering my entire stock of goods at cost. Persons wishing to secure bargains had best call at-once, as the opportunity to buy such nice goods at such low rates is not offered every day. Simon A. Weil. Almost a Serious Accident.— Last Monday morning, a little boy nranied Jordan climbed up one of those young oak trees, in front of Satterfield's old stand in pursuit of a bird, and when he had got some ten feet from the ground the tender branches gave away, precipitating him head foremost to the pavement below. For a few minutes the little fellow was insensible, but gradually recovered. He is doing very well now, we believe.* Local Slashes Here and There. —We respectfully call the attention of some of our friends of both sexes to the article on oui; first page head ed, “A Sad Story'” Whenever we see a young lady turn up her snout and say, ‘‘no man can get -me without he’s got tut a-large lot of j 1110 stamps,” our small change is ans of the latest | staked that she is dying to marry the first galoot who proposes. - ”^Iow to tell when a widow wants a husband,” is the titled of a pamphlet soon to be issued by the local of this paper. • •The Junior Debating Culb will soon be in full blast. The Demo crat has a Demosthenes in that in stitution. The above expensive illustrations represent the negroes “bolting” fiom the next Radical Convention to be held in this city. We are glad to see a disposition beginning io show itself among the negroes to shake off' their white parasites, and set up for themselves; so gfatl arc we, that we have illustrated the probable “bolt.” We cau almost see tears gather in the eyes of our friend T. Snuckturualoo as ne sadly gazes on tlie picture. The Bainbiudgk Male and Female IssTnurs.—The ex/rcisesjof this school were closed on Friday last, mid Messrs. Allen and Critchcll deserve the thanks of their pal ions, aud the public gtirt, orally, for the efficient manner in which they have d scha’-ged their ar duous .duties. .... We do not - believe "Ibcre ara two men under heaven "who could have done more. They have worked zeal ously, unceasingly and faithfully, aud have been poorly compensated for it. There is not a school in the Stale where more pains are taken with pupils. An observation of five years has conviueed ns of that Fact. . Due notice will be given of when the next session begins, and we hope Prof. Alien will gel—as bo merits— a liberal paying patronage. School Examination. Editor Democrat .- • I b»d lhe pleasure of attending Professors Allen and Critehell’s school examination on Friday last. It was a source of regret tlat so few of the patri-ns of the school were present, as they, doubt!e s, as well as the writer of this article, would have been pleased wiih the results. The examinations were confined to the forenoon, and but little time, therefore, could be devoted to any of the classes; but as far as they went they showed that the course of instruction was thorough; and welt adapted to the capacities of the pupUs. I wasespeciatly pleased to see that the smaller children had not been neglected, »nd that the primary branches of education bed been duly aetended to. This is not al ts ays the ease. The more advanced classes sometimes absorb the attention; and the elementary studies are overlooked—in so ranch so, that graduates are sometimes most woefully igoonntin respect of orthography, reading, writing, and even arithmetic. Great credit.is due .to Professors Allen and Cri‘ch- ell for the particular attention they have given to these departments. In the afternoon the order was reading composition, speaking and spelling in the dictionary. Considering the ages of those who euguged in these, all was .well’dune. The compositions were well read, and the speeches for the most part si re well spoken, and although the spelling class did not do as well a* 1 have known the same ones to do, ot rnbre . private occasions, yet they did well. Upon the whole, the day passed off pleasantly. .>"* This institution deserves to be encourag ed, and it ought to be liberally sustained. There are, perhaps, children enough in Bainbridge to make two or three good sehools, and theVr parents cannot do. better for them than to send them to school—can not. indeed, do as well for them in anv other wav. as to give them, if the means can possibly be had a good.education. Piopetty may fail, but knowledged when acquired is a permanent investiture. W- Ksox Methodist Parsonage-—The Meth-' odist Church, of this city, has pur chased the residence of Mr. J. N. West, which will hereafter be the parsonage. We are glad of this, for now ministers will not be subjected to so much trouble and inconvenience. We trust that everything calculated t£ tend inthe least to the comfort of the preacher and his family will ba furnished the parsonage. The position of a Method ist minister is the most arduous that we can conceive of, and we hope that our people will appreciate their hard ships by making their brief sojourn in Bainbridge pleasant. w■« 250,000 bricks of the best, quality for sale at the Hutchins Brick Yard. Jas. A. Byrd, a long, lean, lank, hungry, carniverous looking scala wag of this county, announced the glorious intelligence last week, that ItS was a Greeley man. ‘‘I’d almost as soon vote for a Democrat as Grant;” said this said “seally.’ ; The Rads, of Decatur should elect him Coroner, for its a crying shame to allow so much scalawag, sweetness to expend itself on the' desert air. Now that the political campaign has fairly opened, and every body will desire to keep up with the cur rent of affairs both national and lo cal, we have concluded to offer the Democrat, for the campaign* for $1:25. In fact Greeley is a very nauseons pill for Democrats to swallow. It may be very easy for such papers as the Coliimbus Enquirer and the South ern Recorder to swallow Horace, for he always was a favorite of these papers. We remember when a con siderable part of the ‘columns of these papers were filled with extracts from the New York Tribune. For these papers it is only a Tabor of love to extol Horace Greeley, but with old Democratic papers it is very different. They have long re garded Greeley as one of the mosff bitter eaemies to the South in the 5 whole North. There never was ariy other candidate that required and expected nearly or quite all of his support to come from his political enemies, and from men and frorn a section he has spent his whole life An 50 . a in slandering and abusing.
