The Weekly Democrat. THUBgDAY, JULY 4, 1*72. 4- Tito Young Men and Their Sweef-Iieart» go a Battling. Tbo tornado‘that swept over the •vicinity of New. York some days ago was the severest known in New ark for many years. The Passaic river rose suddenly and overflowed its banks. The shipping was great ly endangered, boats were driven frofn ’ their moorings, trees were blown down, houses unroofed and cellars flooded. Two young men and their sweethearts were out on the river boating. The girls had not fbuqd it convenient to inform their aha fhto whose company they were going, as the lovers would not have been received with the best possible grace at the house. The party sought a secluded, shady spbt, and taking off their outer gar- meats, and like “Bryan O’Lynn, Lis wife, nnd his wife's mother, AU went into the river together." The girls sported like mermaids in the quiet water, and enjoyed hugely the glorious funn little dream ing of the torrific -storm that was coming on. The waves sported gently with their snowy robes, half disclosing the charms that the maidens blushingly tried to hide. Suddenly the sky darkened, and the boat,- which had been fastened to a Bush on the bAnk by the chain, was struck violently by a puff of wind— the prelude to the tempest—and two men’s straw hats, two • ladies’ bonnets, four pair of boots, njaleand female, half and half; two pair of ladies’ hose, No. 4; two pair of gfcnfa do., two men’s flannel snits, two pieces of ladies’ undergarments, a snowy array of ruffles, tucks, flounces, etc.—name not known by the reporter—and some were con trivances resembling bird-cages, with a second story added by tack ing on copies of a paper, all of these contents of the boat were gathered up by the gale and tossed into the river. The girls gave a scream as the clothes drifted aumy. They declared, ffoWeve r, lhcy could swim like seals, and Struck out boldly for their duds, While the gentlemen Vied to right the boht.- This nautical expedition of the nymphs alter their treasures low tresses floated like a beautiful sea .weed upon the water, and there was a more graceful display of limbs in the pOetiy of motion than ever appeared fettered by tights and pads in the Black Crook; they failed to keep up with Xhe clothes. Mean time a few big drops fell from the inky clouds, and in a moment a con tinuous sheet of water seemed to fall from the Bky. The girls struck f5r me Loo*,.which the youths man aged to drag to the shore. On the east bank of the Passaic, around the Kearney 'mansion, i3 a thick grove of evergreens. Here the half nude and dripping party se creted themselves, one of the young men standing sentinel to hail any benevolent-looking individual who .might pass along the road, and who raight; famish hipi with* some dry clothing in which he might go to the city and procure Taiment for the othevs. The girls might easily be taken for statuary, embowered in the evergreen shades. There each one stood dripping wet, sans every thing but chemisctts. The sentinel, after waiting couple , of hours, to his inexpressible delight—he wanted inexpressibles— beheld a “solitary horsemen" wend ing slowly along the rivet road, and giving a sign best understood by the traternity to which-both hap pened to belong, ho procured the necessary articles. A couple of waterproof cloaks enabled the young la.dips.tp steal quietly homo in the darkness, and the first pale rays of the moon stealing through the trou bled clouds 'into their chamber found them sleeping in their little beds. jThen didn’t go out on Saturday, ♦ffbelr Soreness; may v be owing, to a cold, but their mama knows best She is a stout female, with a temper of her own, and she often makes her mark m black and blbe.
